Travels I

Jul 24, 2008 20:56

To be honest, the memories of Japan are beginning to fade now since it's been over a month since I left, and even though I don't want it to be like that, everything is sorta fuzzy so I'll have to refer to the diary I wrote, if I can read my own handwriting that is ^^; For those on tayuri's flist, you guys probably know this stuff already, but I'll put up a quick abridged version. I won't really post that many pics here since this place is public and none of us want our pictures freely on the net. Sorry.

- Travelling time between Adelaide and Narita was 18 hours 30 minutes, give or take a few minutes. That included a brief stopover at KLIA as well to change planes. I'm not sure about most people, but I love taking photos of scenery so as we were travelling west and essentially racing the sun, and the photos (below) don't really do it justice, but it was absolutely breathtaking when we would switch between dusk and night time. The most 'interesting' part of flight(s) though was the old man sitting next to me on the ADE-KL leg. His name was Bob and pretty much he was a ex-serviceman who served in Vietnam during the 70's and so he decided (after he had realised I WASN'T Vietnamese) that I was the perfect sounding board since he didn't know how to use the in-flight entertainment system ^^; I mean, I love talking to random people on planes as much as the next person, but he actually showed me his medicines and told me stuff that I honestly thought was a bit personal for a chat between strangers. Oh, and the flight from KL to Narita was awesome coz a) there was like, 40 people on the plane meant to carry 400+ passengers so we all basically sat wherever we wanted and got to stretch out to sleep, b) I got to see an awesome sunrise over the Pacific Ocean and c) there were about 3 other planes flying along the same line and it blew me away to see them fly in something of a strange formation and I could just imagine this line of aeroplanes in formation headed for Narita. For some reason, this sorta tickled me. Maybe I was just really tired :P

- The thing about growing up in Australia, and especially if you're like me, is that I'm deadly afraid of Customs. The Customs in Australia is pretty strict and I sorta expected it to be just like that in Japan. Except it wasn't. The time it took me to get off the plane and walk out into the arrival lounge was probably 15 minutes. And the longest part of it was waiting for my luggage to come out on the conveyor belt. Immigration was a breeze! The guy guiding people to counters saw my passport and guided me to the "Priority" line and the person there didn't even ask me why I was there by myself and after taking my photo and fingerprints, let me go. And Customs just sorta ruffled through my luggage a bit (and the lady saw my uchiwa, I knew I should've put it in a bag!) and let me go.

- The first thing that my skin did when it touched unfiltered Japanese air was break out into blotches. It was sorta gross.

- Since I had arrived at terminal 2 and tayuri would be coming in at Terminal 1, I headed over on the loop shuttle bus thing they have running. I bought some onigiri and C1000 at a store (that I actually left at the counter after paying until a security guard who also happened to be there called out "Okyakusama!" and chased after me) and settled into to wait for tayuri to arrive. I honestly don't know how I managed to entertain myself for those 7 hours, but I do remember at one point, at about 12pm, there was a girl sitting next to me who looked like she was Chinese. She was an Arashi fan too. How did I know? Coz she was reorganising her bag and in it was an Aiba Dream-A-live uchiwa! I wanted to talk to her, but I was too shy too and she walked off before I worked up the courage.

- While waiting for tayuri come out, I started getting paranoid that I wouldn't recognise her coz she was taking so long to come out; everyone who looked vaguely like her I was staring at hard or anyone who had a bit of a limp I was like "That might be her! She's a gimpy!" :P

- Took a taxi to our hotel in Ikebukuro after we realised we couldn't read instructions. Nearly walked into the private house NEXT to the hotel after the taxi driver told us that was the address we asked for ^^;

- Dinner on the first day was ramen. I ordered the hottest thing available and tayuri ordered the least spicy version. I was lovin' it and tayuri was crying. Old couple who ran the place laughed at us and though tayuri was cute :D Oh, and tayuri has amazing fitting-insane-amounts-of-food-into-mouth abilities.

- Was going to go to Hakone area on the second day, but it was not to be since it rained cats and dogs and so! We headed to Harajuku and Takeshita St, Mecca for all JE fangirls. Did purikura (we had not yet mastered the glitter function, but we soon did!), checked out idol shops (there were only obasans then, score!) and headed to JE shop hoping the rain had kept the (other) fangirls away. And it did. We walked right in and there, on a wall, was Arashi goodness laid out for my viewing pleasure :D Went crazy accordingly and practically threw money at the cashiers. Picture of my haul for that day~ Please note the tenseikunpu pamphlet on the left, soooo pretty *smiles like an idiot*

- Afterwards went to Shibuya, walked around, got lost, tayuri got ambushed by people giving away free tissues (lesson learnt! Once you take one, they all pounce on you!), had parfait, bought takoyaki (which we forgot to eat til 3 hours later), went back to ikebukuro, walked around for 90 minutes through what looked like a yakuza controlled area looking for somewhere to eat, bought more takoyaki, bought sweet potato from old man on the street for 200yen, and then went home to watch the Himitsu no Arashi-chan where Ohno and Sho showed off their child minder's certificate and took care of that little girl and Ohno totally fell asleep XD

- Next day we bought breakfast, meet up with tinybluemarble and headed to Keikarou for lunch. It was full when we got there so we waited for about 10 minutes to get a seat so we looked at the guestbook and stuff around the waiting area. Honestly, it was smaller than I had imagined, but it was cosy. Tayuri and I shared karaage and beer to see what the deal is with Aiba and karaage. Our conclusion? Aiba is an idiot. It's just fried chicken ^^; We also had those peach shaped sweets and they were maximum umai! If I had the space for it, I would've ordered another one!

- The 3 of us headed to Akihabara and as we were exiting, I started to panic a bit coz I thought I had lost my ticket and had to go through all my stuff before I found it in my diary ^^; At first we decided to head for an otouto cafe even though I wasn't that sold on it since I actually have a younger brother so it's really not my sort of moe, but whatever! We wondered around for a while, coz 3 indecisive people in a huge shopping district is SUCH a good idea ^^; Saw a crepe stall and had some even though we weren't even hungry again yet (it being only about 90minutes since we had lunch) and was yummy. There were so many cops around that day coz at that point it had only been a week since the attacks in Akiba and I think we passed the area it happened in as well since there was a large tent with flowers in it.

- Went to a large department store to get postcards and checked out the phone section and saw an easily steal-able Ohno AU poster and if I hadn't been scared of being deported before seeing an Arashi concert, I would've totally taken it. Klepo urges ftw! :P We walked around a bit more and in the end didn't go to a maid/otouto cafe coz we were all too indecisive as to really do it or not. Back at the station, we finally realised that we hadn't taken a picture with all 3 of us and so stood around at the entrance for about 15 minutes looking for someone who didn't look like they were in a rush. Finally we asked a really really tall, like 2 metres tall, European looking person to take it for us. Oh, and while we were looking for someone to take the photo for us, I noticed that there was a girl in a maid costume, so I went and got a brochure from her and there was this creepy looking ojiisan talking to her about other maids, cosplaying and stuff.

- We parted from tinybluemarble there and headed back to Ikebukuro for dinner. This time, instead of wondering around our side of town, we wondered around for about an hour on the other side of town. In the end we settled for curry udon even though tayuri doesn't really like thick noodles. And since both of us like negi, we had a bowl of it to go with the curry :D After that, we hightailed it out of there to get back to the hotel in time to catch the 10pm drama that would have the first showing of Ohno's Maou CM~

- The next day, we had plans to meet up with yuckie-chan and winkychan for lunch, but you know, since we had time before that, we sorta, uh, headed back to Harajuku~ For idol shop goods and purikura of course~ Honestly? Purikura is addictive. And that day, we did so many and got so good at putting sparkles everywhere that I don't even think JE costumes could out shine our creations :D And when we went to meet them, they were running about 30 minutes late, just enough time to take one more round of purikura~

- We then headed to lunch and saw that huge AU ad at the end of Takeshita St on the way. It was the first time tayuri and I had seen it so there was much happiness on our part. Alas! The only disappointment was the positioning of Ohno's legs. WHY?!?! Ahem, that aside, when the Sho!pervs asked us what we wanted to eat, we Ohno!pervs instantly replied "Whatever, we don't care. Just don't make us choose!" I think we were both sick of our own indecisiveness ^^; So we ended up at a pasta place! We all choose a pasta set that came with dessert afterwards. Whoever it was that said Japanese portions were small clearly lied. I could hardly finish everything. Which is why I was glad my handy trash disposal unit (aka tayuri) was there :D

- At this point, I want to point out my eternal love for winkychan who went to the FREESTYLE exhibit (so jealous! *cries*) the day before and bought us stuff. Like posters and awesome, awesome postcards :D Not that I really needed anymore, especially on the poster front, but it's OHNO!

- After lunch, it was karaoke time! And what else to sing but Arashi? It was the first time that I'd been to karaoke in Japan and it was sorta awesome :D Even though there was only 4 of us, the tension was pretty high, and winkychan and yuckie-chan were so good at some of Sho's raps! Like, seriously. As for me, I sing like a dying cat so it was a good thing the music is so loud, not to mention I was taught just how much I DON'T know the lyrics to some songs ^^;

- After karaoke, we parted since we all had things to do and tayuri and I hopped on the metro line headed for the TBS building just 2 stops from Harajuku. Our aim there? We heard that the Arashi no Himitsu-chan promo posters where you can unzip the guys was still up, so we went to see if we could go undress Ohno a bit, if only virtually :P And then, there it was! (Sorry! I'm too short to get a non-glare-y picture) It actually took us a while to get a go at it coz there was this group of women before us and then after they left, there was little boy, probably about 9 years old, who was unzipping each of them and reading the secrets (you can see him at the edge). He did this about 3 times before tayuri got pissed off and just asked the kid to move so we could take our photos XD And Tayuri.... she is truly a crazy Ohno fangirl. She was cupping his virtual family jewels in photos and at one point there was 2 girls that were watching us and started laughing XDDDD

- After having some fun with the Hanadan Final display, we headed back to the station and headed off to Tokyo Dome~ We didn't have tickets or anything, but we thought that it's be easier to buy our stuff beforehand. I can't remember if I've mentioned this before, but Japan is FULL of arashi AU ads, and we were on the look out for Ohno's new solo one at that point and that day, on the train to the dome, we saw our first one! We were so excited, it was possibly bordering on retarded. So we decided to copy Ohno's pose on the ad and while I was taking one of tayuri, coz of my height, I couldn't get one without glare unless I stood on my toes, but cos the train was swaying too much, I couldn't get a clear picture. So when it stopped at the next station, we had a field day taking pictures. Except, that was the stop we were meant to get off at and we only realised as the doors were about to close and we ran off just as the doors closed ^^;

- Tokyo dome, was the first time I saw so many other fangirls! And those lines of girls with boards asking for tickets? From the mouth of the station and extending literally 100 metres! We headed for the goods stall, but coz it was only 3pm-ish, the line was still really long so we went for a walk around the venue and saw the tour thingy. It's a good thing I'm still on the short side, even in Japan, so it was easy for me to get to the front and take an unobstructed picture :D Next we saw where they were holding FREEESTYLE and totally didn't think about how to break in and get our hands on more goods.

- We were looking for a bookstore that winkychan had told us that had new back issues of various idol magazines, and coz it was tayuri and I, we got lost. We walked all over and the only store we found was the Shounen Jump shop so we asked a security person for directions and it turns out it was about 100 metres away and we had actually walked past it before ^^; I told myself before going to Japan that I wouldn't buy any magazines, but >_< I went home with about 4 that day.

- After that, we finally headed for the goods stall since it was nearly time for the show to start and the stalls were relatively free. The girl serving us must've thought we were crazy coz we were just buying things in duplicate, or triplicate and in the end we bought something like 45,000yen worth of goods ^^; And coz neither of us expected to spend so much money in one day we just had enough after I dipped into my emergency money ^^; Damn you JE. No picture of our haul for that day coz there was simply too much to take a photo of.

- Later that night we headed off to Shinjuku to meet up with 2 of tayuri's friends who were SO NICE. Both of them were so cute :D We ended up at a teppenyaki sort of place that had some really yummy food and it was dead cheap as well, I was so surprised. When they asked how we meet, we did the whole "Err, on the net coz we're both are insane Ohno fangirls" and "Yeah, we only met 4 days ago". And then get this, one of them, M-san, says her friend is friends with OHNO. OHNO. AS IN OHNO SATOSHI, ARASHI RIIDAA. Agfhlaok. It was like, please to be introducing us to that friend :P And then if that wasn't enough, after we said that we really wanted those new AU ads, M-san goes "My brother works for AU, let me see if he can get you one" AND CALLS HIM RIGHT THEN. It was a seriously awesome night, tayuri's friends were so nice! Just, gah, SO NICE.

Annnnnnd, that's it for now. I hope your eyes are all @_@ or that it was too boring ^^; I'm not really much of a story teller. But yeah, I think I might have to do this in segments coz that was only the first 4 days of the 40-ish days that I was overseas and it's already this long. Oh! But bonus pictures since I feel bad for not posting many pictures: My luggage after coming back. Even now I haven't finished sorting out all of my stuff and the living room is full of my stuff^^;

Anyways, til next time~

travelling, life, japan here i come!!
