I was pretty excited about the possibility of using
zipcar. Fairly low annual fee, affordable driving rates, gas and insurance included. pretty awesome - low commitment, and lots of ease of use. There's zipcars that "live" near the mall, and near my house, and a ton that live downtown. awesome.
So I decided I would join, and I was feeling like an adult.
Then I double checked the requirements: Must have had a driver's license for at least one year.
I understand why (ensuring you're comfortable driving, and in all sorts of cars, probably lowers their insurance rates). But it makes me sad - I have probably driven a wider variety of cars than a lot of people with comparable driving experience/time. I've never had an accident, and have been driving for about a year now. Granted, not consistently, but most people haven't consistently driven such a random assortment of cars as I have :)
I don't like having to ask people to drive me places. Or to borrow cars to pick up family members from the airport or to take care of my irresponsible younger brother. I want to be independent and helpful that way.
thwarted!
