Late Monday night our apartment building got attacked by a tree.
A huge rotted branch snapped off and landed on the power line. It pulled the power line and phone line all the way to the ground, but did not snap them. The two panel apartment style breaker box thingy was ripped off the wall. The power company had to come and cut the line but could do nothing else. We actually had power until they came out and cut the line to get it off the ground.
City Hall wouldn't call our electricians back. Our brand new just became a city city hall has tied the hands of every utility contractor around here by saying that they must come inspect things like this before they'll turn the matter over to the county. The county issues a permit to fix stuff and then comes out to inspect it before service can be restored.
My neighbour had to go up to City Hall to raise hell. Her son is 7, active, and diabetic. Very dangerously diabetic. His temperature must be regulated (not too cold, not too hot) and his insulin MUST be refrigerated. The only reason we're getting power back this week is because of her son. He makes it a hardship case.
We should have power back by the end of the day. Both of my days off will have been without power. What a fucking waste of my time.
On the upside, the people who own the place told 1b (my neighbour, and incidentally, my landlady) to run extension cords from the laundry room to the house in order to keep the refrigerators running. They ran a line for me too, and it is currently running my computer.
The funny part? The branch landed just after 10 at night. That's the time my alarm clocks go off. I was playing a hack and slash kill the monsters RPG type thing before I went to bed. When the branch landed I thought we were being attacked by monsters and I reached for my short sword. It wasn't there.
I seriously thought we were being attacked by monsters.
So now I'm cleaning... I need to be through in a hour so that I can run the drop line back the fridge, then after it's had an hour to cool, run it to the vacuum cleaner. I have to keep it plugged into the computer for now though, because there's no way I'm getting this cleaned without music.
