On Calling for the Mormon Church to Lose it's Tax Exempt Status

Nov 09, 2008 14:06

None of the money came directly from the Mormon Church as a tax exempt religious institution. It all came from MEMBERS of the Mormon church. I'm just as upset as everyone else that Prop 8 passed but the Mormon church has broken no laws, state or federal. For us to call for the Mormon church to lose it's tax exempt status would A. be fruitless because no law has been broken and B. could have much further reaching implications in that other tax exempt organizations (ie: non-profits and charities) could be held to the same standard. Nobody thinks twice about the American Cancer Society soliciting donations from its members to help get legislation passed for cancer research. This is the same thing that the Mormon church has done only we don't agree with their side. My complaint is not who donated the money, my complaint is WHERE the money was donated from. Most of the money behind Yes on 8 came from out of state. Most of the people backing Yes on 8 were not even from California. That to me is a bigger problem because we are letting people who do not live here or pay taxes here influence our laws.
So, thats my two cents on the Mormon church's involvement in the Prop 8 campaign.
