Thanks!

Clearly you will have to come visit and try this for yourself. Not Ottawa, though. Ottawa's poutine is... unfortunate. Though they do try. *pets*

People need to write more fics where the Doctor and Rose visit Canada. The two of them need to buy toques and go to Tim Horton's for some Timbits and a double double. :-D

“You know,” Rose mused, “Montreal’s not half bad. I mean, aside from the cold and the rude drivers and the homeless person who swore at me in two languages. And-” she pointed a finger at him, growing more animated, “how come we always seem to be walking uphill? Who landed here and thought, ‘Oh, this frozen mountain looks like a good place to build a city.’”

Best line ever. Because it's true.

I actually spent a long time worrying that anything I tried to write for this prompt would be horribly boring. I suspect it's because all Canadians are trained on some level to assume everything should be set somewhere else because nobody wants to read about us.

Mmm. Timbits. :D

Best line ever. Because it's true.

Thanks! :D I think anyone who has ever struggled to walk through downtown Montreal in winter can relate.

As an English major I feel totally qualified to say "trufax". One of the weirdest things about Can Lit was that things were SET IN PLACES I HAD BEEN. Like... Montreal, or like, the prairies. And every time I'd think, "I don't want to read about this place, this is boring!"

I always get excited at first (back when I went through my Margaret Atwood phase, I was always going: "Wow, a book set in Canada!!!")... which would quickly turn to boredom.

Part of it could be all the movies that are filmed in our cities and then made to look American or European. Possibly this leads to us thinking subconsciously: "Toronto is pretty cool... SO LONG AS IT IS CALLED 'NEW YORK.'"

lol WHAT AM I SAYING? Toronto is never that cool. What? I can't seem to stop.

We guard our national treasures DAMN CLOSELY; they will come at our poutine over THEIR BURNT-DOWN WHITE HOUSE.

(I will one day let go of 1812, but not today)

Also, ROTFL at the Nurgle! You know, I am pretty sure that you can't even marry into my family if you're not a Leafs fan; my grandfather did everything but put it in his will. You should have seen the Look my gram gave one of my sister's ex boyfriends when he said he liked the Canadiens . . . I try to stay out of such politics, myself, but there's no escaping it completely when you come from a hockey family! Though honestly (and my grandfather would roll in his grave if he heard this) I'd give quite a bit to be in Cammalleri's shoes right now; I mean seriously, thirty freakin' million?!

I've actually long suspected that Americans would LOVE poutine. Clearly, "cheese curds" was cleverly named to throw them off.

I sometimes think that Canadians are the only ones who know anything about 1812 - and we weren't even Canada yet back then. Ah. What an exciting history we have!

HAHAHAHAHA. OMG, IT IS SO TRUE. Most of my friends are Leafs fans. At first I found this to be an appalling state of affairs. Now I find that it does wonders for my self-esteem. Every time I feel down about the Canadiens, all I have to do is think about my Leafs friends and I know it could be worse.

Thanks for reading! :)

I'm totally on board with the cheese curds. I love cheese curds. Wish we had a cheese factory in Alaska. I used to gorge on the things when I went to Tillamook when I was in college. It's the fact that said nuggets of deliciousness are grouped in with fries and gravy that throws me off. How much cholesterol does one dish need, anyway?

Oh, no--we have cheese curds here, especially in dairy states like Wisconsin and Vermont. You can also get them at farmers' markets and some higher-end groceries. It's just that, for one reason or another, wets and cheese curds never got combined. Plus it's hard to do properly in the "big cities" because they *don't* have ready access to fresh cheese curds.

misses poutine

I'm still dubious about the merits of poutine, but I love this fic!

I'll make Opal write a fic about its awesomeness after she returns from Canada. :D

Thanks!

I have always wanted to try poutine... it seems to have everything that I love in one bowl. :D

And seriously, I'm not freaked out about cheese curds. I'm from Wisconsin. If they don't squeak in your teeth, they're just not good enough. :P

Hee. It IS quite tasty. Though probably something that's not good to have more than once or twice a year for the sake of your arteries. :D

Thanks for reading!
