Sho watched Nino rest beside him, his left hand softly patting on Nino's tummy as he gently lulled him to sleep. He then looked up at the clock above their bed.
1.a.m.
It was time.
/// Two days ago///
"I reaaally don't know what to do!" Sho said exasperatedly as he flipped over some pieces of beef shortribs. Opposite him sat Aiba, who watched their food sizzle deliciously on the yakiniku grill.
"Well I would say a pre-order receipt for the upcoming Zero Time Dilemma 3DS game," Aiba said as he gulped down some beer," but chances are he already preordered it."
"This is Nino we are talking about. He probably ordered it one month in advance or something.." Sho said as he picked at a small bowl of edamame beans.
"How about those gamer merchandise online?" Aiba suggested, "I saw some really interesting ideas like a Mario Pipe Mug and that Tetris lights set.."
Sho blinked as he pondered over the idea.
"... No," Sho said as he picked the cooked meat off the grill, "how about something that is.. well.. a bit more special?"
That was when an idea hit Aiba.
"Just bake him a cake!"
Sho cast him a skeptical look in response.
"Aiba-kun, remember what happened the last time I tried to make Nino breakfast?" Sho said, and Aiba seemed to remember as he doubled over in laughter.
"Really now, Sho-chan! One little incident of flipping pancakes up to the ceiling isn't that bad!"
"Anyhow, it's been a long-established fact that I can't really cook," Sho said sulkily, "besides, I can't exactly handle an oven."
"Sho-chan, an oven isn't necessary for cakes these days you know," Aiba said as he took out his phone and searched for something. He tapped on a link and handed his phone over to Sho, who looked at it curiously.
"An Icebox Cake?"
"No baking required, and it's supposed to be really good!" Aiba said excitedly,"isn't it a great idea?!"
Sho looked at the recipe. Aiba was right. The steps for the cake was really simple- whip up the cream, arrange some cookies in a circle, layer them bit by bit and then freeze overnight.
Fairly simple, and he could almost imagine how delicious it could be.
And then he remembered his last blunder with cake making.
"Aiba-kun," Sho said with a dejected look on his face,"remember the last time I tried to bake a cake and I mixed up sugar with salt?"
"Ah right..." Aiba stifled giggles at the memory of Sho's blunder, "but that's not too hard. Just swap out the white sugar with brown sugar. It'll work!"
/// Present ///
Sho looked at the recipe in his phone and the ingredients on the kitchen counter.
"Heavy cream...check. Brown sugar, check. Vanilla extract, check. Two packs of chocolate wafer cookies, check. And er.. ah. Dark chocolate. Check."
He tiptoed out of the kitchen to their bedroom and looked over at Nino. He was still asleep.
He then quietly closed the bedroom door and hurried back to the kitchen.
"Yosh. Time to start," Sho said as he looked at the recipe.
"Beat cream, sugar and vanilla with an electric mixer on high speed until soft peaks form."
Sho poured in the cream, brown sugar and vanilla extract into a bowl and plugged in the electric hand mixer that Jun had bought for them.
He pressed the "high speed" button.
The beaters whirled into motion, and the mix sloshed out of the bowl onto the counter and his black shirt.
Sho sighed as he stopped the mixer and grabbed a tablecloth to wipe up the mess. He tried a few more times with the mixer, but the ingredients just kept splashing and splattering messily out of the bowl.
Sho pursed his lips and reached for his phone to dial a number.
After a few rings, someone picked up.
"Sho-kun? Why are you calling me so late at night?"
"Ah, Jun-kun!" Sho said hurriedly, "I'm sorry if I'm disturbing you. The thing is, I need help on how to use the hand mixer you got me and Nino."
"... Isn't it simple? Just press the button and mix the stuff up."
"But it all keeps splattering out!" Sho said as he looked down at his dirty shirt in disdain, "and I can't seem to keep the bowl still..."
"Alright try this," Jun instructed,"go grab a towel and put it under your bowl."
Sho held the phone to his ear with his shoulder as he grabbed a towel and placed it under the bowl.
"Done? Now, put the beaters in the mix and THEN press the 'low speed' button."
"Isn't it supposed to be high?"
"If you increase the speed slowly, you will reduce messy splatters on the counter and on you," Jun said,"just move the mixer around the entire bowl and centre.Keep doing it."
Sho followed Jun's instructions, and to his relief, the beaters whirred and mixed beautifully in the bowl. He smiled as he realised the cream was probably going to come together nicely. And then he realised he forgot something.
"Wait, Jun-kun! What do they mean by 'soft peaks'?"
Jun scratched his forehead as he tried to find a way to explain it.
"Er.. the peaks are formed whenever you stop and lift the beaters from the bowl. Just lift them up from time to time to check. Soft peaks are uh.. .. erm..soft."
"Jun-kun, that isn't really helping," Sho said with a nervous chuckle.
"Like," Jun continued,"the peak should be obvious enough but not as pronounced and sharp as firm peaks. Keep mixing. You'll know what I mean."
"...Well. I'll try," Sho said uncertainly, "thanks Jun-kun! Goodnight!"
He then hung up and resumed his work, gently moving the mixer around in the bowl.
/// Later that morning...///
Nino breathed deeply as his eyes fluttered open and gazed up at the white ceiling above him.It was morning, and the soft rays of sunlight filled the room as he sat up.
And there, sitting on the bed beside him, was Sakurai Sho.
With a cake in his hand.
He could feel his cheeks flush faintly at the pleasant surprise as his heart leapt.
"Good morning, Nino," Sho greeted and held up the cake to Nino, "happy birthday."
Nino took the cake and looked at it in surprise and awe. Chocolate wafer cookies were layered neatly on top of each other, each layer cleanly separated by an off-white cream. It is topped with some cream and a generous amount of chocolate shavings.
"Wow, Sho-chan.." Nino began, ".. where did you buy this so early in the morning?"
Sho looked at him in surprise.
"Nino, I made it."
Nino looked at him in shock.
"You MADE it?! When?!"
Sho nodded and gave a slightly shy smile as he looked at the cake, "last night after you slept. I worked on it until 3am and slept until just a while ago. It was actually Aiba-kun's idea that I try out a no-bake cake, so I know it is really simple."
"No no no it's really awesome, seriously!" Nino praised as he handed the cake over to Sho, "I really REALLY want to eat this for breakfast now."
Sho chuckled."Go wash up," he said, planting a kiss on Nino's forehead, "I'll get breakfast ready."
Nino nodded, but tugged at Sho's arm to bring him close and brush their lips softly together.
"Good morning, Sho-chan," Nino whispered,"and thank you."
Sho grinned as he wrapped an arm around Nino's waist, balancing the cake in his other hand.
"You want a birthday kiss now?"
Nino laughed.
"Later. I'll have it with the cake."
With a wink, Nino skipped his way to the bathroom, leaving Sho to shuffle his way to the kitchen.
Sho had started his birthday with a sweet morning, and Nino knew that that day could only get better.
In the kitchen, Sho gave a sigh of relief as he took a knife to cut the cake open.
"At least this time this cake won't turn out salty," Sho said quietly under his breath as the knife made a clean cut in the middle.
