I've been doing Fieldwork at Valley Central High School. I have to do 35 hours this semester and 35 next semester then student teaching in the spring. Basically in Fieldwork I observe teachers. I was lucky, in that i was placed at a supportive school. One of the girls in my class is at a school and all she does is sit in the gym all day.
I go to 5 different english classes. 10th collaborative, 11th regents, 12th collaborative, 11th regents and a college english class. The college english class the kids are stuck up but they other classes the kids are good.
Now the first class in on the first floor and the 2nd and 3rd are on the second, then fourth and fifth are on the first. They have 3 minutes inbetween classes. I almost never make it from the first floor to the second and vice versa on time. I wonder how the kids do it.
The more classes I take on education. The more I appreciate MPH. Especially the no regents. New York State has the most mandatory tests of any state. At MPH we were not exposed to any of it.
I have to take a class this summer so I can graduate on time. Well not on time on time would have been this spring but things happen.
In order to take student teaching next spring I need to be done with all of my other classes. I did not want to take 3 400 level english literature classes next semester, so I am taking 20th Century Literary Criticism over the summer. All I have left of my english classes are any 3 400 or 500 level lit courses. I have 3 classes of education left before I can student teach as well.
I really realize hanging out with people how behind I am in pop culture. I did not really watch TV when I was growing up. I read... a lot. I saw the show Friends for the first time last week and I saw that i was not missing anything. I did however subscribe to the Babysitter's Club. I got a new book every 2wks I think it was. I still love to read. I find that if I do not read outside of my classes, that my brain goes crazy and craves it.
I also see, especially when I hear my girlfriend and her friends talk, how much I missed out on things in high school. They have stories about parties they went to and dodging trains and smoking and going on road trips. Even driving to class together and ditching it. I skated. I skated 7days a week and 2x a day on tuesdays and thursdays. My mom was telling Sam on Saturday about when she had to get up at 5 to take me to the rink at 6. Those were the only two days that I acutally got up early. On those days I woke up right as my alarm went off. I got dressed and then woke my mom up who was not happy. I'd skate for an hour and come home shower, eat and go to school. On the weekends I had competitions.
When I told Sam that she said that I didn't miss out on that much. Just kids being stupid kids. She also said that it makes for very interesting stories. She said that it was cool that I did a lot when I was young.
I feel like I wasted it though. What do I have to show for my years skating? Besides medals...I really want to get back into it. There's a rink in Poughkeepsie across the bridge.
