Between the Lines || a Jack/Ianto fanmix

Between the Lines || Sara Bareillis

‘You and me. Always between the lines.’

I feel this song is just everything that Jack and Ianto’s relationship is. You have to read between the lines to see what’s going on between them and that’s the beauty of their relationship. So much has gone on between them that it’s bound to be messy with so many things unsaid - but that’s what makes it a relationship.

Love You Anyway || Boyzone

‘It’s unbelievably hard to love you, but I love you anyway.’

They may never actually say it to one another but you can tell that they love one another, because they’re both as bloody obtuse as each other when it comes to feelings. This song could be directed towards either of them for that very reason.

What’s Left of Me || Nick Lachey

‘I’m half the man I thought I would be,
but you can have what’s left of me.’

Another song that I feel applies to either Jack or Ianto. They’re both broken in some way or other, although I suppose I see this more as Ianto’s come on song to Jack after everything went down with Lisa and Canary Wharf. Although, conversely you could see it as being after Jack comes back from the year that never was.

Strange & Beautiful || Aqualung

‘To me, you’re strange and you’re beautiful…’

Very much Ianto’s vision of Captain Jack as the enigmatic leading man and even though I don’t exactly see Ianto pining after Jack, I can see him lusting after the notion of Jack playing the white knight after everything that happened with Lisa. He needs someone to pick up the pieces for him.

Tumble & Fall || Feeder

‘We tumble and fall, together we crawl’

Jack and Ianto have suffered through a lot together at Torchwood and this is another song that can be seen from either point of view. Both Ianto wanting Jack to come back from his adventures with the Doctor, and Jack wanting Ianto to come back from the dead. It’s a vision of love that isn’t perfect, because there is no such thing as perfect love. (and you’re deluded if you believe there to be - as cynical as that may sound, I’m afraid it’s true)

Many of Horror || Biffy Clyro

‘When we collide we come together,
if we don’t we’ll always be apart’

Again, another rather cynical view of love, but this song is very much Jack and Ianto in the sense that even though they fight, both physically and verbally, they’re together even if it hurts and even if the future is uncertain - they’ve got now. And sometimes that’s enough.

Taking Chances || Glee Cast

‘Don’t much about your life,
don’t much about your world,
but don’t want to be alone tonight.’

Jack and Ianto working for Torchwood in a song. They’re taking the chance of being together, even if Jack goes away, even if Torchwood blows up in their faces, even if Ianto dies they might as well take the chance for a moment of being together - of not being alone - rather than nothing.

Sleepwalker || Adam Lambert

‘Everywhere that I go I see another memory
and all the places we used to know
they’re always there to haunt me.’

Jack at the end of Children of Earth after he’s lost everything, including Ianto. Torchwood as usual comes between them.
‘A thousand years time you won’t remember me.’
‘I will. I promise.’

Chasing Cars || Snow Patrol

‘I don’t quite know,
how to say,
how I feel.
Those three words
are said too much,
then not enough.’

Words don’t need to pass between Jack and Ianto for them to have a conversation. It’s amazing how many private moments they share with looks when they’re in public spaces, whether it’s with the team or with other people.

Portions for Foxes || Rilo Kiley

‘And the talking leads to touching,
and the touching leads to sex,
and then there is no mystery left.’

‘Honestly, it’s just sex, sex, sex with you people.’ And aren’t Jack and Ianto all about the sex, sex, sex. They’re also as fucked up as each other and therefore emotional attachment means they’re just bad news for each other. But then there’s that old saying, two fucked up people make a beautiful fucked up relationship - or maybe that’s just my saying.

To Die For || Rooster

‘I wanna live, and I wanna breath,
always thought you’d be the one to set me free.’

For never was a story of more woe than this of Jack and his Ianto. Oh, look, cheese ahoy, but I have to admit it was rather poetic the way in which the star crossed lovers met their downfall and never was there a more perfect song to encapsulate that than this one.

‘I only want to live if I can find somebody to die for.’
