(no subject)
So... today was my first day in Sun as a full-time employee.
It was interesting looking at all the folks and how they'd changed. It's amazing what a year can do for some people - for the most part it seemed to be for the better.
Anyway, I was brought in with the other new hire and we went over the basics.It's interesting that we work simply on big ol' desktops - that said we work on heavily shiny desktops (I got an Ultra 20 - mucho shiny, sure it's a few years old, but still very nice to run especially with a dual-head setup). We were assigned our desks and personal machines and handed an OpenSolaris CD and told to install one on the other. It's nice, I really like what they've done with modern OpenSolaris.
Of course, nothing goes smoothly. We were meant to get our accounts today... the other new hire got his, so I did a quick check to see if mine came through. Nope. So I went to his machine and looked him up on the employee register, and he was there. Looked myself up, and no dice. The going theory is that because I'm a re-hire, IT/Ops (the computer people) are having more fun reactivating my account than any set of human beings could morally have with their clothes on. Talking to Greg (who said that it's dangerous for me to be in the same building as him - in case one of us says something that really isn't palatable in the company (but hugely entertaining to us)), he also had a similar problem and his scenario caused many and varied problems for a number of months.
Now, even if this is a simpler situation than Greg's, this actually is bad in more ways than one. Yes, I can get onto the network, but there are a lot of things I can't set up without an account, like a phone line and getting my machine properly on the network. On the upside, I get to choose the name, and I'm choosing Metheglyn if I can. I dunno why, but it just sorta fits my style of name-choosing.
More on the saga as it unfolds but as I said to my boss, "I have a habit of making things complicated. I guess I should have mentioned that in the interview".
