Well, that's an interesting question, with an interesting answer. The easiest way to answer this question is simply "Because I didn't go to LA". A couple of friends and I started to plan to go to Los Angeles after we graduated to try to get work in film. We got tickets, and half way through July, I got into a huge fight with Mike, over some very stupid shit. I wasn't mature enough to deal with some of the issues we were working through (and some other issues he was not mature enough to deal with), so I cancelled my plans. I used the grad money to pay for bills, which I have since recreated. I got hugely depressed and got this job up in Grand Island. Then I moved out. I still have the bills, and my parents tell me I've started on a career. I don't have the money (or a reason) to move, other than to move, and that's expensive.
The other way I can answer this question, comes in the forms of a couple justifications I keep around to make sure I don't go fucking insane every night I try to sleep: I have lived here all my life. I never lived alone until a year ago, and I'm not sure I could have done it without my family. I've started writing, and illustrating again, a practice I love, and can do in any city, any town on the planet. If I can publish some things, and get some consistent work done, and become the author I've always wanted to be, I'd be happy. Even if it meant staying in this town. But that doesn't mean I will.
I hope that works out for you, because I find that eventhough I have an answer, I'm still asking myself this all the time.
