Okay, so I just finished Foundation. And I know I should consider it in the context of the times, and pay attention to the brilliant extrapolation of infant technologies, but...goddamn it, I just didn't like the fucking book.
First of all, the sexism got to me. I know it was a male-dominated genre in a male-dominated time, but Jesus. In the entire novel, exactly one female has a role large enough to require a name. And that female is present for two scenes and is a vicious shrew easily placated by shiny things. No, seriously. I would rather there had been no females whatsoever.
The time-jumps got annoying, too. I know the focus was supposed to be on the long stretch of events and not on individual characters, but I got used to the characters. And the jumps were only acknowledged in characters' conversation, so here I am thinking that this scene follows directly from the previous section when SURPRISE! It's been fifty years, and all the characters you were just getting used to are dead.
I'm sure someone can explain to me why it really is a brilliant feat of science fiction, and I know that it is, but I did not enjoy it, and I'm kind of pissed about that.
My lame sisters will not go sledding with me. But we're making brownies instead, so I'm fine with that.
