Jonty. Just everything. I loved the slapped down of Charlotte over the remembrance board, I loved the conversation with Ross’s brother, I loved the body snatching. I loved the utter awesomeness of cutting the tattoo and the way he had to cover Ross’s face with the shroud before he started. I’m so glad for the way this episode turned out. From the preview it seemed like the episode would be all about Charlotte investigating Ross’s mysterious last message. She did investigate, but as we discovered at the end, it wasn’t about her at all, she was just a way of getting the message to Jonty.
Although I was glad that she got called out on the remembrance board, and I’m glad that Ross’s lover didn’t get sidelined for her in the investigation about Ross’s death, I really like Charlotte in this episode. I like the way her faults are shown (taking over the giving process with the remembrance wall, being judgmental when talking to Rosalind) without detracting from her being a good person. I’m hoping for a Jonty-Charlotte alliance to bring Maltravers down.
This episode also really made me want more Rosalind-Dorian interaction. The affection and irritation and ability to hurt each other that comes from growing up together was awesome. And the pony bit made me laugh. In fact, I just want more Rosalind full stop. Her scenes with Theo were great, especially the final one where she starts to show some vulnerability. I wonder what the plans ‘daddy’ has for her are? Hopefully we’ll find out next week.
Maltravers crying after the funeral. It’s good to see that whatever their project is, both Maltravers and Linus Cooper are clearly affected by the damage it does however hard they try not to be.
Thing I didn’t like:
The fools. They really are just awful as characters. I kind of see the role they are supposed to be filling - slightly naive outside view of what’s going on but I think Maddy could fill a similar function and be a hundred times less annoying.
Thing I’m on the fence about:
The Dandelion Club funding cut-off. I love the power struggle and the interaction between Maltravers and Dorian and from a comedy point of view I can see why the ‘feast’ was there. But having made a huge fuss about how rich the club members are it really jarred with me that they were so dependent on the club funds that they couldn’t even buy some decent food and wine.
The mystery deepens:
Linus Cooper started at Trinity 11 years ago, shortly before Charlotte’s father disappeared. Are the two things connected?
In the episode about a ‘suicide’ we learn that Rosalind’s mother is dead, also a suicide. From the incredibly creepy cupboard of memorial dolls Linus has it looks like there could be a lot dead people who have had some connection to the project. Could Rosalind’s mother be one of them?
Does the Dean know anything about the experiments? She seemed pretty insistent that Charlotte not investigate Ross’s note.
Next time:
Dorian’s father! Not dead after all and kind of evil. Should be fun.
