okay, since i already ranted about my frustration erlier - here's some happy-fan-stuff.
cause, um. i'm on such a retro- lord of the rings trip lately. OMG YAY LORD OF THE RINGS, *loves* i've re-read the books for the xth time and dove back into fanfic... i've got tons of free time at the moment & one definitely needs that (and lots of patience) when dealing with this fandom. and especially when reading the fic - but now that i got the hang of it (again), it's so awesome <3
random (mostly old) stuff i've read & loved.
• dm of the ring. what if lord of the rings were a role playing game - d&d style, being played by those fellowship dudes,; mainly by legolas-aragorn-gimli ... weirdly hilarious.
• flow charts of awesome - from xkcd. a diagram showing who was where and with whom; it's hilarious in the most wonderful/confusing fashion. also includes some other movies (jurassic park, star wars, etc)
• what if lotr had been written by someone else? awesomeness! includes excerpts from douglas adams' the mostly harmless ring of power, an epic tale by vergil, hemmingway, mark twain, and so on. there's even a whole au movie starring marlene dietrich & humphrey bogart. gah, fans are so AWESOME!!! (sometimes)
• absolutely gorgeous picspam about the colours in the lotr movies. it's a rainbow of pretty!
• walking directios from bag end (hobbiton) to mordor. HEE <3 i love me some maps. and they're very precise too!
• 'DAY ONE: ringwraiths killed: 4. v. good. / met up with hobbits. walked forty miles. skinned a squirrel and ate it. / still not king' ... the very secret diaries of the fellowship and some others, during lotr. it's not really fanfic. okay, maybe it is. (but not really)
• how lord of the rings should have ended ... *giggles* exactly what it says. (although my favorite of those vids is probably the one about star trek)
+ some (real) fic.
• about every single fic by jedi sapphire. she writes legolas centric stuff, focusing on friendship & family and all that. and i absolutely adore the way she blends humour with some more serious themes and (of course) wonderful h/c and lots of protective elves. and men. there's missing scenes (bookverse), murder mysteries, dark tales of legolas' past, fluffy friendship things, ... etc
• and of course thundera tiger. she's an absolutely stunning author! my favorite is while the ring went south, which takes place after the fellowship sets out from rivendell. very much ensemble centric (with a bit more focus on aragorn-legolas-gimli), wonderful dialogue, action, slowly forming friendships, thinky stuff ... *draws hearts* it's gorgeous.
• a little nudge out of the door by jocelyn. which is about legolas' journey from elfling to grown-up elf & about his first travels around middle earth. it's beautifully written, with amazing original characters and just akjg;mkjbv SO GOOD! it also has about my favorite legolas-thranduil relationships ever; full of tension and heart. it's an epic story, but it almost gets better with each chapter!
• two action packed ensemble/legolas centric fics by littlefish. i haven't actually read these two recently, but i know i loved them years ago - hopefully they are as good as i remember them being :/ hmm, well i'm probably gonna read one or the other (or both) tonight.
• the river by indigo bunting. this takes place some time during the fellowship's journey from rivendell to hollin & weirdly enough it's all about sam/legolas friendship. and it is wonderful. there's also a lot of ensemble stuff, some h/c and action, etc.
