This I promise you (46/?)

“That’s all I’m asking for Stephanie, Sara and I are working double time to figure it out but I thought maybe you could help.”
“If I come up with anything, I’ll get back to you.” The words were simple but I knew they’d settle his questions.
            “Please do and hey Stephanie?”
            “Huh?”
“I’m sorry. I wish there was a way to do this without bringing up what he’s done to you.”
“It’s alright Greg, I’ll deal.” With that I flipped the phone shut throwing a glare in Warrick’s direction. “Anything else you’re not telling me?”
“I’m sorry Stephanie. We’ve all been trying to figure out the best way to ask you about it but believe me this wasn’t how I wanted it to come down. Greg just seemed like the best person for the job, you trust him.” Under these circumstances Warrick’s laid back attitude was really wearing at me.
“I trusted you until this! Now I don’t know how I feel.”
“I’m sorry, alright? I’m trying to make this as easy on you as I can but you’ve got to understand that.”
I was about to respond when I heard the door creak open. “So what’d Greg need?” Nick’s voice was simple, though his face showed he knew that I knew he had knowledge of the circumstances.       “So the gig’s up hey?”
“Let’s just say she’s not really all that happy.” Warrick seemed to feel the need to state the obvious.
Nick took a deep breath letting it out slowly before he spoke. “I’m sorry Stephanie, I didn’t mean to hurt you. I know right now you cant see it but we did what was best, we had your back. Now, if you can trust me in that aspect, I still owe you a shopping trip.”
I would never understand why but something in me forgave them all, they were trying to do what was best. “Of course I still want to go.” My voice was gentle as I spoke even though I was upset still.
            “Good, you still coming Warrick?”
“Hmmmmm, good looking girls in clothing stores, yea I think I could do that.”
“Alright then it’s settled, we will continue forth with this trip.” Nick held the keys out to me. “You know where you’re going and how to drive around here.”
“Thanks.” Taking the keys from him, I wanted to be mad, really I did but yet I couldn’t. There was something about him that made me want to trust him. Which meant Warrick was in the clear as well, if Nick trust him then why shouldn’t I as well? “Let me grab my purse and I’ll be ready to go.”
“So what is it you do for a living?” Warricks question caught me off guard.
“I was dealing cards at one of the little casinos off the strip until two weeks ago when they closed it. Seems embezzling doesn’t go over so well with the Gaming Comission.” Grabbing my purse from the kitchen chair where it hung, I turned to look at him.
“I heard the Mirage is hiring. I’m sure you’d get in.”
“I already tried getting in there but they aren’t exactly impressed with some of the casinos I’ve worked. After all none of them are high end strip casinos.”
“Miracles happen to those who believe.” The twinkle in his emerald eyes made me wonder exactly what he meant by that.

“Nick take a seat,” Warrick opened an eye to look at me. His lean frame reclined in the waiting room chair. “She’s going to be fine, the bullet barely grazed her, Brass is with her.”
“I know, I know really I do. I-I….” I was at a loss for words for once. I let myself drop into the chair beside him, there was no use pacing. She was alright, this wasn’t Kristy all over again.
“Your vacation isn’t meant to be this exciting.” At least I could count on Warrick’s sarcastic sense of humor.
“It’s aggravating knowing that she’s in there scared and in pain and theres nothing I can do to fix it.” I was beginning to come down from the adrenaline high of the shooting. I still couldn’t believe the idiots had taken a shot at her in her own yard though. At least he was still alive to pay for the crime, and pay he would.
“She’s fine. You heard her cussing at the nurse. When Brass is done with her, you can see her, until then you’re welcome to annoy the living shit out of me.”
“Gee thanks you’re such a trooper.” In all truth I was glad Warrick was there, if he hadn’t been there was no telling what I might have done.
“No problem, but this is the last time I go on vacation with you.” Warrick cracked a smiled as he watched me.
I couldn’t help but laugh despite not wanting to. “Sounds good to me.”
“At least the morons in custody and not in a body bag so he can pay for it.”
“Yea, thanks for that. If I’d shot him, I was liable to have killed him without a second thought.” It was trust, for what he’d don’t to Stephanie he deserved to rot in a small box in the ground instead of a jail cell.
“He’s more miserable in the cell than he is in the ground. If you’d killed him, he’d of ended up a mardar for the cause and what good would that do you?” Now both he and Tyler can rot together in a cell. That is if they don’t end up dead first.”
“Sounds like you’re hoping for that.”
“Tyler’s a piece of work, in front of both Brass and I he said that he hoped she died a gruesome death, that he’d told her things like this would happen if she couldn’t keep quiet.” Warrick shook his head as he looked at me. “I’m pretty sure that after this chances are we wont get any information out of her, you might be able to but we both know that wont stand up in court.”
