The day of the contest was bright but bitterly cold, the kind of British day where fall is there only in the colour of the trees, as the wind is pure winter. Katie wasn't really nervous, though she tried to get a few of the Gryffindors to come along and watch, but all of them were busy. She didn't want to face Daphne alone, and she was sure the Slytherin would bring some of her housemates along to sneer at her.

But she went anyway, checking her Quidditch gear and pulling her hair back into a ponytail so it wouldn't get in her way, she checked her Nimbus for stray twigs, and waited for the blonde Slytherin to show.

When she did show, however, Katie was a little flabbergasted. Not only was she alone, but she was in Quidditch robes as well, and singing in a way that was so lovely, even though the language was foreign, it almost made her forget what a horrible person Daphne was. She could almost ignore the green and silver.

"Hello, Katie." Daphne said with a smile, running a hand through her hair, which was braided, and pinned against her head. "You ready to play?"

"Always." Katie answered, shaking herself to remind herself that Daphne was indeed a Slytherin. "Surprised you didn't bring any of your slimy friends along."

"Why would I do that?" Daphne asked, shifting to ready herself to take off. "It is still one-on-one, isn't it?"

"Yeah, it is." Katie admitted, flushing of the thought that she had asked people to accompany her, because she didn't trust the Slytherin girl, only to have Daphne show up alone, without anyone else. Good thing no one had come with her, she would look a little foolish.

They took off, and play began, a normal game of one-on-one to twenty goals. Katie assumed it would be simple, but she hadn't counted on how different Daphne's play was. Most of the Slytherins played the same, brute force and as many fouls as possible. She had gone in, anticipating that, and instead, encountered Daphne. She played far more strategically, but at the same time, was almost reckless. Some of the aerobatics made Katie jealous, and wished that she had stuck with the gymnastics she had taken as a child.

It dragged on, fairly evenly matched as both of them got tired, and then, in one moment, it shifted, Katie intercepted the ball, which threw her off her balance, and the closeness to the other girl's broom was enough that she had to veer to the right to avoid hitting her, only her broom began to spiral.

Katie hadn't been knocked off her broom in years, and she was sure the Slytherin had done something to her Nimbus as she tried to twist and pull up to avoid the crash--but then everything went black.
