I read it and a follow up article, and it beggars belief! Because they use an electronic system that is only available at the point-of-sale (or front end of the line) they systematically do this to children ALL THE TIME, it is just that this time some Jobsworth* from the district came along and made them do this to all the children at once, 40 rather than 2 or 3.

I then read further, and all the people up to the senator have been standing up and saying that they will make sure kids won't go hungry if (when) their lunch is taken away - but this is already 'covered' by kids being given fruit and milk, so I can't see them doing anything once the fuss dies down.

It also mentions a lot of PTAs have been lending money to cover children in that position, so it is obviously widespread and worrying people. I hate that it happened, but perhaps something else will be done - although I expect they will scoff at the idea of checking the balance first, as that is a bigger one-hit budget expense than all those wasted meals slipping through.

*As in, 'It's more than me job's worth' attitude to bending the rules orturning a blind eye.
