Dear H5O PTB:
No competition derby team skates with only one jammer, particularly not one about to go into the playoffs. The best jammer on the track can't get through an entire game on her own -- she's doing the most full out skating and usually taking the hardest hits because she's moving the fastest.
Two jammers in play, two back-ups.
Should you lose a jammer, right before a championship game, you'd move a pivot into a jammer role since the pivot can be designated a jammer during a jam. (although some teams don't use pivots, the good ones will).
Did you not see a game before writing this episode? Maybe, watch Whip It on Netflix? Or were you too busy laughing at the whole concept of roller derby to do any research beyond Wikipedia? Three more lines of dialogue and you wouldn't have had to change a thing. Catherine could have skated as the new backup. Part of the team but not likely in the game.
Also, seriously? Figure skating on one blade with toe picks twenty years ago will not make you suddenly wonderful on derby skates. Inline skakes, yeah, there's some muscle memory crossover but my kneecaps can tell you if you try to apply figure skating techniques to derby skates, you'll kiss hardwood. Or concrete since a lot of derby is played on hockey rinks during the summer when the ice is out. Would it have killed you to give Catherine a roller derby past? Apparently, you were sniggering too hard to consider it.
