With the finally episode of season four of Merlin about to show (legally) here in the great white north, I've been thinking about the show a fair bit (fairly constantly). I'm wondering -- for all the talk of the "old religion", have they ever mentioned the religion that's replaced it? Or have I just missed it ( Read more... )

I saw a couple of early eps and didn't like it much. It seemed to be trying too hard. And, I hate to say this, but I don't find the lead very attractive.

I've never seen any mention whatsoever of a 'new' religion. You'd think the old religion would have been replaced by something, right?

Also, Gwaine should always be shirtless. Sure, he might get a little chilly, but it would be worth it.

They don't mention the new religion, but they do mention god. When I first started reading fan fiction in this fandom, my anachronism meter went off every time I encountered 'oh, god' or 'oh, gods' (both of which I hate like crazy) and so when the alarm bells sounded, I went back and began finding evidence of the word 'god' in the show. (This was before I realized that anachronisms and Merlin are like pb&j.) "Merlin, thank god you're here." "Merlin, bring this up again and I swear to god I will banish you." So I think it's pretty clear what the new religion is, in a tell don't tell kind of way. ("The gods" makes an appearance, too, in 1x13.)

In one of the very first episodes I ever saw there was a clear shot of Morgana wearing black high heel pumps under her floaty polyester -- although we could call it silk in a pinch except for the whole no trade with China yet thing -- gown and I thought, oh, it's that kind of a show. Okay then.

But they're so emphatic about the old religion I just wondered if there had ever been any emphasis on the new. Probably safer not to...
