Two Solitudes

So, I'm dealing with some family stuff and am off to one side talking to a relative-through-marriage and the year's new movies come up and she starts talking about this big movie she just can't wait to see and how everyone is talking about it and... I've never heard of it.  I've never heard of it to the point where this happened two hours ago and I can't remember the title.  Although I think Ryan Gosling might have something to do with it.  Maybe.  He was definitely mentioned.

Now, we're the same age, only three months apart and she assumed I'd have plans in place to see this because she knows I go to the movies more often than she does.  When I said I'd never even heard of it, she looked stunned.  When she asked what movies I was looking forward to, I said:

"I can't wait for the Avengers. It's going to be awesome."

And she looked confused.

And I said, "You know, Ironman, Thor..."  As no comprehension dawned, I added, "They had individual movies.  And Joss Whedon wrote the Avengers... he did Buffy?

And she looked even more confused.

We went on to talk about family things -- (oh dear lord I do not want the spoon collection!) -- while I thought, "Thank frakking gods for the internet, where geeks of the world unite."
