And to celebrate the whole new year, let's wrap up the old year.
Favorite television show I'm fannish about: Hawaii Five-O
Close second: Supernatural
Honourable mention: Leverage
Although I was still very involved in Supernatural fandom and although I spent way too much of my emotional capital on the show and the meta and the fic it inspires, I wasn't exactly having fun with it most of the time. I can't quit it, and in all honesty I don't wish I could, but these last few months of Hawaii Five-O have been positively sparkly. When a good chunk of your fannish life is concerned about the effects of Hell, sparkly is good. Very good. And I like pineapple on my pizza. Besides, who doesn't love a fandom where most of the fic is: banter, banter, banter, then they have sex, banter. Leverage, I love like whoa while it's on but it's so on and off and on and off, it's hard to build up a head of fannish steam.
Favorite television show I'm not fannish about: Big Bang Theory
Close second: Total Wipeout
I caught the S3 episode with the ring of power, found myself saying the "One ring to rule them all..." with the guys, and got run over by the clue bus. This show is for me. Geeks of the world, unite. As for the Total Wipeout thing - and it has to be TOTAL Wipeout, the UK not the US version -- part of it's Richard Hammond and part of it's watching people hit those big red balls. Don't judge me.
Favorite book: Feed by Mira Grant
Close Second: Cold Magic by Kate Elliot
Feed takes place a few years after a zombie apocalyse -- but it's a fully functional scientific zombie apocalyse -- also featuring the evolution of social media and its conjuncture with American politics. I cared about every single character in the book and I ended up bawling my eyes out on a freakin' plane! "Yes, I'm fine. Stop staring." Cold Magic is one of those rare books that looks at the point of change between magic and technology. Both books begin a series.
Favorite set of DVDs: The Middleman
Nothing else even came close.
This series was funny and smart and geeky and tongue in cheek and adult and obscure and while a dozen seasons would have been wonderful, I'm actually a little surprised it lasted as long as it did. ABC Family? Really?
Favorite Movie: Toy Story 3
No seconds because I didn't actually see a lot of movies this year and most of those were only meh.
Cried. On a plane. Again.
Favorite Music: Christain Kane's The House Rules
close second: Great Big Sea's Safe Upon the Shore
I have everything Christian Kane has ever put out. He's my go to truck/housekeeping music and has three songs on my running playlist. Had GBS not put out a new album this year, Steve Carlson's Days Behind would have been in second spot (I also have everything SC has ever put out) but GBS did put out (rimshot) and so Steve came in third. (yes, everything GBS has put out too.. including a few things only available as llimited downloads off their official site)
