I read an early review of CK's first single released under his new big boy label (Columbia) and the review said (among other inane things and maybe one point that had some validity) that the song -- More Than I Deserve -- is about a man telling his woman that she's more than he deserves.
And I thought, hmmm, that's interesting because on the Acoustic Live in London CD I don't remember any specific gender being mentioned and I listen to that CD a lot in the truck. The gender neutrality is one of the things I love about a number of Kane's songs. (and a few of Steve's) And so I checked on the internets for the lyrics -- because my memory kind of sucks -- and hey, I was right, there's no gender mentioned. Closest reference is 'baby' which is a little less than butch perhaps but not specifically female.
And I wondered, did the label make him make it more specific or is it a gender bias from the reviewer?
So I went to CK's myspace page and listened to the clip of the new version (and that whole clip thing? really frikkin' annoying) and in the first two minutes and four seconds at least, there's no lyric changes.
We have gender bias from the reviewer for a win. Because a man has to be singing about a woman. And hey, I'm all for that gender bias making sure Chris makes lots of money so he can stop making movies I don't really want to see and start touring. Preferably to Canada.
But WE know who he used to share digs with.
Ping!
Why yes, that is the sound of a CD hitting my tin hat.
