When I woke up in the morning I could tell by the dark rings around Zac’s eyes that he hadn’t slept much the night before. My brother is an insomniac. He hasn’t always been. Neither of us. I think we both started having trouble sleeping right around the time the photographs hit the press. That's why we actually both became insomniacs at that time. Zac plays video games the whole night when he can't sleep. Usually he could eventually fall asleep if he sat there and played long enough, but he only could seem to sleep for a few hours before he woke up again.
The events in 2000 hit me a lot harder than him, and I assume that’s why they affected me more. I wanted to be with Zac just as much as he wanted to be with me. But somehow, it began to eat away at me. It was hard for people to look at me like a pervert when sometimes they just pitied him. They'd say; Look at that perverted guy who fucked up his little brother's life. That wasn't how it was between the two of us. But it was how they thought. I hated it and Zachary hated it too. It was also a part of the reason why I became so hesitant about our relationship. But often it was also an excuse to hide my shyness. Zachary knew that though. I could never fool him.
After our clean brothers image was crushed in one day and I had problems to sleep, Zachary often stayed up just to wait until I went to bed, to make sure I was fallen asleep before he was. He didn't want me to feel guilty. So he was taking care of me in a way because of that. Somehow, it became a routine to him. He still made sure I always got sleep before he did.
“Hey,” I smiled at him, sitting up in bed. He smiled, surprised that I was awake. I noticed he was sitting in front of the television, the game controller on his lap and crumbs of potato chips all over the floor. In fact, his hair was damp. That indicated to me that he’d been awake for long enough to shower and go out already.
“Sleep good?”
“Yeah,” I said with a lazy smile.
“I didn’t want to wake you up because you looked so cute,” he laughed. “But I know you have class in an hour so I was just going to wake you up any minute.”
I glanced at the clock. It was 7 in the morning. God… I didn’t want to go to class. Zachary and I had talked until three in the morning the night before. We had talked about everything from England and my College classes. We didn’t really talk about us that much.
“You going to shower here?”
I slid over to the edge of the bed to stretch my legs out before I stood up. I yawned before I answered him. I wanted to crawl back into bed so badly, but I’ve never been on to abandon responsibilities.
“I’ll probably shower back at my dorm. I didn’t bring any clothes to wear so…”
He looked disappointed, but nodded. “That’s cool. Want me to walk you back?”
“You don’t have to…”
“I know,” he said with a smiling shrug.
Zac and I laughed at my ruffled hair and sleepy expression was I walked through the streets of downtown London at his side. He said I had “just had sex” hair, which of course wasn’t true, but I laughed and agreed when I caught my reflection in a car’s side-view mirror.
“When do you get out of class?” he asked when we reached the front steps of the dormitory at the college I was studying at.
“Late… it’s a Thursday, and Tuesday and Thursdays are my late days,” I admitted. “I have class from eight until noon, and then a break in the middle of the day, and then I have class again from three to six.”
His eyes widened. Although Zachary was brilliant, in my opinion, he had never gone to school. After the band dissolved, he just bought his own apartment in Tulsa and spent his days playing video games and hanging out with the friends… well, the only friends who still accepted us. There weren’t many, to be honest.
“That’s a lot of fucking class,” he laughed.
“Tell me about it…”
“Can I meet you for lunch?”
I felt bad telling him no, but I had already made plans with Quinn again to spend my time with her. We had nothing done on our project and we really needed to spend some time walking around the streets of London and interviewing people.
"I won’t bore you with details of our lame history project, but basically we had decided to ask people how World War II had affected their lives. Our plan was to walk around with my camcorder and ask the elderly citizens of England about their experiences."
“I… wish you could…” Zac’s face dropped.
“But I have to meet Quinn to work on our project.”
“Again?” he whined and then sighed just to make it obvious how disappointed he was. “Tay… I just got here. I want to see you.”
“I know but… Zac… I didn’t realize you were coming. Let me just get this project out of the way and then we can spend time together, I promise,” I said, trying to ignore his pathetic, persuasive expression. “Spend some time exploring the city today, okay? I’ll meet you right after class at six and we can get some dinner… go out to a bar or something.
Since 2000 my brother has a weakness for alcohol. He never did drink until that year, but well, if you haven’t noticed, a lot changed in 2000.
Zac grinned. “Alright fine. But only if you have something to drink. I drink now!” He told me and smiled proudly.
"Me too," I replied. Even though it doesn't happen very often.
“What? A few weeks before you left Tulsa I remember you lecturing me because I offered you a beer at the Fourth of July barbeque!” he said, and then added in a mocking tone, “Don’t even offer me that shit… I happen to believe in obeying the law.”
I smirked. “And I still do believe in obeying the law. But in England… I’m not breaking any rules.”
“You’re such a bad ass, Tay,” he laughed and rolled his eyes. The next thing I knew he was enveloping me in a hug, burying his face into my shoulder. “My decent brother is growing up…”
“Shut up…” I said, almost inaudibly because the last thing I wanted him to do was stop talking. It felt so good to be with him… communicating with him like I used to.
“Call me as SOON as you get out of class!” he said with a stern look.
I squeezed him tight before I stepped away.
“Don’t get yourself in trouble while you wander around today,” I laughed at him, because my brother has a tendency of causing a scene wherever he goes. He attracts drama and conflict, probably because of the way he treats the human race in general.
“I’ll see what I can do,” he said as I pulled open the door to my dormitory. “But I can’t make any promises.”
