First off, apologies if you happened to see this post yesterday before it got deleted - LJ was giving me some coding problems. >:( Anywho, this spiffy little guide was made by the one and only
thedrowned who put quite a bit of time into a guide like this to make all the little newbies feel welcome - but don't worry! Older members will enjoy it too, I think. :D
Without further ado...
So. You're the probie, huh? Don't like the nickname? Well, it won't last long, as long as you do what's asked of you. I'm Colonel Everett Young, leader of the expedition on the Destiny. Here on the ship, everyone, even the military personnel, have jobs to do. It can be something as simple as cleaning the latrine to something more advanced like repairing EVA suits. Although our numbers have diminished some, there is still a great number of tasks to complete. All we ask is that you do your share and participate when you can. The more you do, the higher your rank becomes. Yes, even you'll get a rank. You'll be assigned your own quarters and receive fair rations. Beyond that, it's up to you what you do with your time. Don't worry-there are loads of things for the go-getter to do aboard Destiny. Oh. One more thing, probie. Make sure you
introduce yourself: we all want to know who you are. Consider that your first assignment.
These are your quarters. They're not fancy, and I don't expect you to make them home. But they're all we have on the Destiny, so you might as well make it as comfortable as you can. You're responsible for keeping your personal area as tidy as possible-as you can imagine, clutter in a tight space isn't really conducive. To the extent the Ancients designed the Destiny, there is a bed, bed-side table, overhead light, table, and couch. The quarters differ in some ways, so if you find another crew member with something extra, it's up to you and that crew member to work out a trade. Remember to keep your door locked at all times when not in the room. This might seem a little excessive, but we've been through some tough times, and it's for the better if you do. Your second assignment is to
meet all your crew mates. Try to give a good impression.
What's that? Feeling a little lost? Heh heh, that's understandable. There's a lot going on here. I'll give you a hand for now. First, if you've got questions, you'd better ask them. A lot of the crew has gone out of their way to tell you what they can on the bulletin board, so make sure you
read up on everything. If you want to know your ranks, there's a listing already up in
the same place, so you can just check there. The requirements are also listed, so work hard to go up in the ranks. I'm sure that you'll make friends easily, but in case not, you should
visit the mess hall. And if you've only recently joined the Stargate Program,
the Ancient database is for everything you want to know. Just be careful-Doctor Rush is pretty overprotective of it. One more thing. If you plan to use the communication stones to visit friends and family back on Earth,
let us know. I hope it helped, probie.
Don't mind Colonel Young. He's just got a whole lot on his shoulders. Hi, I'm First Lieutenant Tamara Johansen. But you can just call me T.J. Trust me, it's a lot less dramatic than Colonel Young makes it sound. I mean, yeah, we're all stuck here on Destiny and we're moving away from home, but we can still live and work together, am I right? There are some things you should know off-hand, so I made you a little list.
* A lot of people have lost their loved ones or others they truly liked. If you make a mistake talking with someone, just apologise and keep going.
* We've run into some aliens over the span of our journey. One group in particular, usually blue in colour, are out for the Destiny. They want her and will stop at nothing short of ruining her.
* Two members of our expedition, Doctor Rush and Chloe Armstrong have both been abducted. Chloe, however, may have gotten an alien entity inside her, so if you are around her, be cautious and have a guard nearby.
* About the prisoners: they are called the Lucian Alliance. They boarded us a while back and tried to take the ship. In the end, they're just P.O.W.s. I try to treat them with respect, but under no circumstances should you visit one without a guard.
* The food isn't all great, but it's better than it has been. That's thanks to a few times we've managed to find a planet with life and were able to extract a few seeds. Our hydroponics crew is trying, so if you've got the time and a green thumb, you should give them a visit.
We've made a full account in our records, so if you'd like to know more about what's happened,
read this report. There's one other thing. We sort of have this little club that we'd like to invite you to. You can join it
here. We talk about all sorts of things, and is actually more of a "water cooler" than the mess hall is. Well, see you around. And take care of yourself.Hey probie! I'm First Lieutenant Matthew Scott. So I hear you're new to Destiny. Everyone's first trip through the Stargate is pretty rough, but it'll wear off. Now that you're here, you won't be going through it too often. We only have one Stargate here, the one you came through. It's actually two feet smaller than the Milky Way Stargates.

Woah, careful! That's a kino. We have them all over the ship. They're like little flying cameras; they're pretty great for surveillance. By the way, if you ever go recon a planet, you might just get to control one some day. But hey, since I've got you, let me show you around Destiny!
Yep. That's the Destiny. The Ancients built her for an important mission, basically to sail to the centre of the universe. Hah hah, don't believe me? Well, we'll see. Here's some things you should know.
* The Destiny is about 2,450 feet (or 747 metres) long from bow to stern, and her width is approximately 1700 feet (or 518 metres) at her wingtips. We had a hard time converting the Ancient measurements, so the "smarter" guys just used a Kino to map her.
* With a full crew and her solar "wings" extended, the Destiny weighs about 23,805 tons. You heard me, probie, tons. Short or metric, she's a pretty freaking heavy bird.
* She has a few types of artillery. She's got a 4,212 millimetre charged particle cannon and two sets of 1,064 millimetre multibarreled lasers. That's all we have a great deal of access to; who knows what else Destiny's got up her sleeve.
* Destiny's got fifteen FTL engines. Well, she's got sixteen, but one of them blew out in a fight with some blue aliens. We know Destiny goes faster than light, but so far, we don't have a speedometer on this thing. For all we know, she might go faster than that, but we just can't gauge it yet.
* Destiny comes with two shuttles, one of which we lost at first, but got it back under some very strange circumstances. Er, you'd better ask T.J. about it.
* According to the Ancient database, max crew's supposed to be around two hundred fifty for small missions and up to one thousand for long trips. But we only have a roster of about eighty.
* Destiny's got some great shields! But we're not sure about the details just yet.
* Destiny's only gate has an address of its own, and it's nine chevrons long!
So, had enough of the Destiny yet? If you have, you might want to rethink that since you'll be here a while. It's good to have you on board.
Oh! You're the new member, right? Don't worry, I'm not gonna call you "probie" or tell you what to do. Yeah, I'm totally non-military personnel! Name's Eli Wallace. We didn't get a lot of help when we were new, but that's no excuse to not help newer guys, right? Trust me, once you get to know us, we're awesome. Well. Except for the military guys. They're a little...stiff.
This is Camile Wray, an HR rep and a general busybody. She's a good person, but don't make her mad. She was in charge of personnel at the Icarus base.
This is Doctor Nicholas Rush. He's incredibly smart and runs most of the Destiny. He doesn't seem to like anyone, and he'll snap at you for just about anything. Be careful around him!
This is Adam Brody. He got assigned to the Icarus Project because he's really good at translating Ancient. He's also really technological, so runs a bunch of the ship's systems with me and Volker.
This is Dale Volker, an astrophysicist who helps run the systems with me and Brody. He likes classical music (yuck!) and has a really awesome green thumb. He runs the hydroponics lab, usually.
This is Doctor Lisa Park, a scientist whose specialty is kind of unknown to me. She helps wherever there's a need, and is pretty smart. She's a vegetarian.
This is Chloe Armstrong, who's actually a civilian: her dad was the one brought on the Icarus Project. She's been infected with an alien entity... so just be careful around her.
This is Second Lieutenant Vanessa James. She's under Colonel Young's charge and was supposed to go to Iraq, but got lucky (or unlucky) when she heard about the Icarus Project.
This is Colonel David Telford. He was supposed to be the leader of the expedition, but when the Icarus base got attacked, Colonel Young had to cover. Telford was once under Lucian Alliance brainwashing, and no one trusts him very much.
There are a few people I'm not listing because they're gone now. You should probably ask T.J. about them. They were really great people. Well, those are the oldest crew members. Don't forget to meet the rest. See ya!
Well, well. Fresh meat. I am Master Sergeant Ronald Greer. While the others might condone laugh and play, there is work to be done at all hours of the day... Did you see what I did there? I rhymed. Hah hah hah, yeah, that's good. Now, you, my friend, have a duty just like everyone else. As Master Sergeant, I expect you to report to me when each is completed, or if you have any trouble. But that won't happen, will it?
That's no, sir.
Now, we have certain
rules about what you
can and cannot say. It may seem a little strange, but that's why you're called a "probie"-you're in a probationary period. Heh heh. Occasionally, we have
parties, the main way we celebrate a deed well done. If you don't show up, well, some might get to thinkin' ya hate us. Try to keep your conduct the same as your duties-constant and strong. I'm off, recruit.So. You've had a little tour? I'm sure, with time, you'll slip into the particulars very easily. It all takes some getting used to, and you're not the only one who's had to make some tough choices. Well, I'll let you go to your quarters now.
. . . . . . . . . .
Did you really think I was going to leave you without throwing you a bone? I would have easily left you to the dogs in the past, but you seem like a pretty good kid. If you ever need anything, anything at all, and I'm not around, I want you to talk to my two Core Commanders,
purpletrance and
mercscilla. It doesn't matter which, they know the ins and outs of this place better than anyone. Don't be afraid to talk to them. And be careful, probie.
Part of Destiny's Flight Path
Thank you again,
