this is what learning feels like [open]

Washington was by far the worst place to attempt sunbathing. Really, how somewhere so close to California could be so dire was lost on Lorna. She didn't mind the cool, didn't even mind rain. But the absence of sun was starting to bother her. Either way, Lorna ended up inside again.

Sitting against the wall in the training center, on the ground floor with three books around her, Lorna hated the feel of libraries and tended to do her reading elsewhere. The fact that she was even reading up on the war -the second one, since she wasn't at all interested in the first one, had been a direct nudge from Emma.

Germany, apparently, was her biological father's mother country. She already knew from her birth mother that he was Jewish. Lorna had the urge from there out to cram as much of the history into her mind. It wasn't a sense of getting to know what her father might've gone through, simply to understand where she'd come from. Amy hadn't ever been too forthcoming with information, but Emma seemed to be doing what she could, and Lorna wanted to be prepared when the time came.

If that meant sitting on the floor in the training center with history books, a glass of water and a pillow at her back, then so be it. Lorna had always been pretty good at studying.
