"To learn, you have to be kicked in the ass" [OTA]

Feb 08, 2011 22:38

Today was just one of those days; those rare moments where Haylie slowly let her emotional walls down enough that she could start to process the things she normally allowed to fester and stew inside. Right now, the emotions playing out in her heart were the ones of fear and heartbreak from the attack on the base. If she reflected upon it enough and ( Read more... )

Now that there were plenty of showers to go around--thank god--Wade wasn't avoiding becoming a sweaty mess and continuing his daily training regime. He'd really have to thank Mac for doing such a speedy job. He was no Barbie, but showers were one of the best creations known to man. That, and fruit roll ups.

But the only problem with the training center was that it got crowded and was full of sweaty men. Just, ew. Wade liked being outside much better so once he'd done all he could in the gym he all but skipped to the outside training area to bask in the fresh air. Fresh, not being an understatement. Unstrapping his swords, he respectfully set them down on the ground before stretching a bit.

It'd been awhile since he'd practiced some of the old katas--his sensei would have his ass--and it'd probably be best if he practiced before he forgot them. They were really only for 'discipline' and whole bunch of other stuff Wade didn't think he needed on a regular basis, but, he didn't mind it for the moment. It was a nice day and a good way to

Glancing around the courtyard as she walked, Haylie spotted Wade across the way stretching out and sighed happily. Really, she wasn't looking forward to having to scour the entire base for either man and the quicker she could focus on something productive? Well, the better off the entire camp - and landscape - would be. Mostly because she was positive that Emma would throttle her if she wrecked the courtyard again. And the less she dealt with the telepath, the better.

Jogging across the path to where Wade was stationed, Haylie decided it would be better to box up those feelings for now because she didn't feel like blowing up the mercenary even if some of the people wished she would. And hurting the teacher wasn't conducive to a rich learning environment. Sort of.

"Wilson."

Yes, she knows Wade doesn't like being called that. But she's a little too wound up to care.

Surprisingly enough the merc was focused enough in his kata not to move or stir when she approached. He continued on without breaking form--but of course managed to lift his eyebrows at the mention of his last name.

"Is lost at sea, but easily replaceable because apparently all volleyballs are named like that." He continued on but kept talking to her once the kata allowed him to face her again. "I can get you one if you really miss him once I manage to get a nice little hall pass."

Or snuck out was more likely. And probably under a sheet in Mac's car, should she be true to her word. Wade doubted he'd get the approval to leave. But then again he really didn't care.

"Wade." She started, somewhat sarcastically, but fell silent as she watched him move. Head tilting slightly to the side, she studied his movements curiously, body swaying slightly in time with his movements.

The comment about the pass, however, broke her concentration and caused her to snort. "Keep pissin' off Sykes and you'll never get one. Really, Wade, what's the deal with you two? I think the man's been through enough lately without havin' t'put up with your usual ... charm."

"Mmmmmmyess?" Sarcasm or not, training the dog was important. The correct name deserved positive reinforcement. The questions about Sykes earned Haylie an eyeroll from him. It really was hit or miss with the guy amongst the camp. There were those who loved him, and those who wanted him dead. Wade was pretty sure everyone who wanted to fuck him were the ones who didn't mind him. "If I recall I was there going to save the princess too."

Even if he got stuck serving as distraction. It was a bullshit move, but at least he was there. Wade finished up the kata and let himself plop down onto the ground, letting out a good breath. The proper way to finish a kata would be to close his stance and bow. But they were not in Okinawa, she was not his sensei, and he was not going to bow to anyone ( ... )

Sighing heavily, Haylie pinched the bridge of her nose and let Wade run his mouth because really, who could shut him up? "Oh, sorry, I guess I forgot about that while I was busy gettin' shot and makin' sure that Allerdyce lived long enough to get help." Nope, she wasn't angry about that still. Not at all.

Remembering what she was here for in the first place, she walked over to Wade and plopped down on the ground next to him, hand going to scratch at the scar from her bullet wound.

"I need somethin' from you."

If she had to guess, she'd posture that Wade's reply was going to be something sexual or idiotic. Or maybe even both, considering his level of special.

"Would you like a cookie or a cracker?" He said as he leaned back on his arms, watching her interesting reaction to his verbal diarrhea. She wasn't going to get sympathy from him. That was life, it was life here, and he wiped his ass with missions like that.

But the mercenary was surprised when she moved to sit down beside him. The confused looked melted off of his face as soon as the words 'need somethin from you' left her mouth, and sure enough what he was thinking was evident on his face. He had a hard time wiping the smirk off to compose for his sarcastic response.

Inclining his head into the side of his shoulder, Wade pouted. "You didn't just come here to talk with me? I'm hurt. All you women want is sex. Why can't we just have a nice relationship!!?"

"Actually, I'd like Hendley's skull shoved up his ass but that's not happenin' anytime soon." It wouldn't take much for Wade to get that Haylie was never around this kind of thing. She was kept at arms' length from her mother's job with the NYPD, and she'd spent too much time in hiding. This was a whole new world to her, so she was going to bitch about it and she could care less what Wade thought.

Rolling her eyes at the smirk and his rather loud reply, she resisted the urge to just smack him upside the head and instead cleared her throat.

"I think y'know the answer to that already."

A pause.

"I need you to teach me how to fight."

Well there was always that. Wade would have Ethan or Daken's skulls up their asses but it would still be funny had it been Jack's. Or anyone else's, really.

"No, no I don't. I need you to tell me--" He shut up at her request and gave her an odd look.

She was in this base and she didn't know how to fight? Figured. No wonder their numbers were up and their strength was down. But her coming to him made him curious. "And why are you just now coming to this conclusion?"

The dilemma she was facing here was a curious one. Haylie refused to allow herself the appearance of vulnerability but right now she was asking Wade for help. It was hard to appear invincible when one couldn't fight. So now it was whether or not she disclosed the truth or if she lied.

Seeing that she wasn't an expert liar, she opted for truth. "My powers won't protect me all the time. If I can't blow shit up, and someone like Daken finds me without my powers again, I'm screwed."

Whoops. She wasn't supposed to say that 'again' part out loud.

The merc let out a snort, sitting up some more to fold his arms. No kidding the other mutants couldn't do shit without their powers. It's what gave Wade the upper hand--just go ask Rictor, who recently questioned it.

However the information on Daken definitely caught his interest. "Figures he was an emo little racist. His sob stories can't get him a good lay so he has to try and pull the rape."

The snort was what Haylie deemed an action typical of the merc with the mouth, and she ignored it. However, his reaction to her comment about Daken sparked curiosity. How'd he know the feral tried to rape her? Well, Wade probably just made a logical assumption based on her reply.

"How he'd even be able to get some without drugs or alcohol involved is forever a mystery." Haylie quipped dryly before looking over at Wade awkwardly.

"So, are y'gonna help me or should I ask someone else?"

He'd definitely made an assumption. It wasn't that hard considering who Daken was, his personality, and his uncle. It was just in his blood, and Wade wouldn't expect any more. "That's why it's called rape."

Wade stared at Haylie a moment before sitting back again to consider this. His legs crossed together, his boots scooting closer to his body as he tapped his chin. Why oh why should he bother training someone....it could be fun? Yes, maybe. It was definitely something new to do. There wasn't any reason why he couldn't--sure he could make some up. Eh. Why not.

Finally he took his hands from his face and pointed at her. "Alright, but you want me to train you, you do things my way--got it?"

Haylie shuddered visibly at the thought of what Daken would've done to her had the nurse not shown up at such a convenient time, and then decided to push that thought far, far away where she wouldn't have to touch it ever again.

Studying Wade's reaction, Haylie was all but certain that he was going to refuse. However, when he agreed, she couldn't help but stare.

And the little voice in her head was telling her that this was a horrible idea because she was in Wade's hands, of all people. And she'd probably regret this. "Within reason, yeah."

Wade was just a drama duck and liked to build the suspense. But he'd sincerely thought about the situation. Sort of.

"You'll have to train naked." He reached over to tug at the top of her military shirt. "The clothes are weighing you down." This of course was a luxury joke. But if she went along with it he wasn't going to oppose.

The tug at her shirt caused her to whip her arm around and slap his hand away defensively. Haylie was too worked up to be touched so suddenly and unfortunately, Wade happened to cross a line.

"Forget it." She snapped, look hardening as she glared at Wade. Unfortunately, she didn't realize that he was mostly joking.
