Survival Instinct - OTA

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains. Never was the truth more plain than during the recent attacks at Netherfield Park, in which a household of eighteen was slaughted and consumed by the horde of the living dead.

"My dear Mr. Bennet," said his lady to him one day, "have you ( Read more... )

"Holy shit!"

Liv had been wandering around rather aimlessly, toting around a large book on human genetics. She needed a place to sit down, some place that wasn't swarmed with people and allowed her to study. The smallest sound could and probably would distract her. So she couldn't possibly stay here, with somebody else around, reading. Turning pages. Breathing.

She had been on her way out again when she realized the book title. It was so ridiculous that it sounded interesting again.

With a lopsided grin she leaned against the backrest of the couch.

"Don't worry, I won't eat your brain. I might look like a zombie every god damn morning but I prefer a good steak. Cooked."

Angel didn't recognize the girl so she just sat there with wide eyes for a moment until the other redhead spoke. Nervous giggling bubbled up and quickly turned into a gaffle before she could finally reply. "I'm sorry! I didn't think-- well, I mean I did think you were a zombie for like a split second but you don't look like you're dead or anything. You just startled me. I sort of got lost in this book. Have you read it?" She asked glancing that the book the other girl was carrying.

Great. Mystery girl was reading something like super smart while Angel was freaking out over a zombie novel. "I don't usually read stuff like this. Well, obviously I do sometimes, but I don't just read stuff like this. It just sort of caught my attention. I mean who mixes Jane Austin and zombies?"

Liv chuckled. She wished she could lose herself in a book like that, but if she had been in her place... She would have punched her and that was rarely a reaction that made instant friends.

"I do look dead, I've seen enough of my reflection. It's all about the right amount of not sleeping, soldiers and comfy military vehicles."

Sparing a glare for the book she was carrying she sighed.

"Nope, haven't read that book. I did read Pride and Prejudice aeons ago and thought it could use some sprucing up. Definitely sounds a lot more interesting than genetics."

"The beds aren't much better than the trucks I'm afraid." She could try and argue with the girl about her appearance but as someone else who didn't take compliments well, Angel knew when to quit.

"I actually really liked Pride and Prejudice." Angel said quietly. It was one of her favorite books actually. "If you don't like it, why are you reading it? Are you scientist or something?"

"Figured as much. For some reason serving your country equals not having fun or anything resembling luxury." Liv had always wondered about that when her father told stories from the good old days. For her it always sounded like entering a convent and that was actually among the only places she wouldn't have gone to to avoid jail.

"I'm just not a book person, you have to sit down and read them, not much fun in that."

She sighed and lifted up the book that felt like it weighed about a ton. It would one day serve a purpose and keep her warm when she found a fire she could throw it into. The thought of her being a scientist amused her greatly and she chuckled.

"Nah, I'm a biokinetic and so far I have used my powers intuitive, I just want to know what I'm doin'."

Threatening a guy to turn him into a girl was more fun if you knew you could actually do it.

"I know, right?" She exclaimed back with a laugh. "Why does being patriotic equal ugly shoes and a sore lumbar? The Army needs a makeover. Bad."

Angel nodded though she didn't agree. To her books, were an exciting escape where she could go anywhere, be anyone, fall in love, steal a car, whatever she wanted. All from the safety of her sofa. Even when she was a kid, without a friend in the world save her Nana, she had her books.

"Oh, I get it. Learn about the human body and you won't have to fumble around when you're healing people, right?"

"They definitely need someone in charge of uniforms with a little more fashion sense. I will miss my jeans."

She wouldn't miss flashing everyone around whenever she bent over-but in the end that always got the attention of any man in the vicinity with the least amount of effort.

"Yeah, something like that. Since I actually managed to get rid of my glasses I figured I'd have to be able to do more. It's more effective if you know exactly how things work instead of just randomly poking around."

Trying to remember when she had last had something actually qualifying as conversation, aside from general pickup lines and smalltalk, the part of her that was still the young girl that had been taught manners decided to come to life.

"Oh, my name is Liv, by the way."

"I desperately miss my shoes. I have the cutest shoes. Manolo Blahnik wrapped knee boots, Rock & Republic Paulina Ankle-Wrap Sandals, Jimmy Choo Double Banded Booties..." She stops and sighs wistfully. "I could keep going but I think I might actually cry."

It wasn't that Angel was uppity with her designer brands. She shopped at thrift stores way more than she did at upscale shops but that just made those precious few pricey items that much more special to her. They weren't just shoes or a bag, they were hard earned little treasures she could wear.

"You fixed your own eyes? That's pretty impressive. I should stick close to you. I'm a little accident prone and I can't seem to go on a mission without coming back bleeding."

Angel facepalmed and immediately offered her hand. "I'm so sorry. That was so rude. I'm just sitting here jabbering and you have no idea who I am. I'm Angel, Angelica Jones really, but everyone calls me Angel. It's really nice to meet you Liv."

"Well, I do own... two pairs. I accumulated more from time to time but had to leave it behind. Traveling with only one small bag sucks but at least you don't have to haul around suitcases all the time."

She did like pretty clothes, unfortunately she was rarely able to afford them-and having to leave rather quickly more often than not she had started to cut her wardrobe down to whatever fit into a duffel bag she carried pretty much everywhere.

"Well, I'm assuming that that's why they dragged me here anyway, to patch be some sort of team nurse."

Liv stared down at the offered hand for a moment and clutched her book tighter.

"It's alright. Uhm... I really don't like touching people if I can avoid it. I get all sorts of information I really don't want to have."

Angel nodded. She could relate. Her dad worked construction and they had to move to follow the work. They mostly stayed in New York and Jersey but they rarely stayed in any one place more than a year. Her dad let her keep a toy box and one suitcase. If it didn't fit when they moved, she couldn't keep it. Wearing the same 7 outfits didn't make her very popular with the kids in school. It didn't matter that her clothes were clean, she was labeled poor and the kids were vicious. It was the same way at every new school. "Hopefully, you stick around long enough here. Not that we're allowed to keep our stuff anyway. I plan to talk to Captain Sykes about that though. Maybe I can start a petition or something."

"We can certainly use one. Dr. Chandler is great but she rarely goes on missions with us. It's a miracle no one has died before getting back to base."

Awkwardly, Angel dropped her hand and forced a smile. "It's okay. Don't worry about it. Marie's not super touchy feely either. It's cool."

"Let me know if you do, I'll sign it." Chuckling to herself she tried to picture herself becoming a soldier, inclusding the attitude and everything. She failed miserably and was glad she couldn't even begin to imagine it. For now it was sort of nice to have a place to stay that provided food and everything... But it would be really hard to avoid people.

"I don't have that much experience with healing really bad injuries, but I figure if my mutation can kill people it should work really well the other way around, too."

She had healed herself quite often and found that it was relaitvely easy, so se wasn't worried about that part at all. She wasn't worried about going on missions doing who-knows-what either. That could be fun.

"It's a little like someone you just met telling you right away about the terrible divorce of the parents, how their sex life is and everything in between. I can't really switch that off. I can ignore it, but it's there and pretty uncomfortable."

"To be honest, I haven't quite mastered the art of learning yet. I'm not very patient and definitely not used to people so I get distracted in no time. A soundproof room without furniture is the only environment that I can se myself learn in for longer than ten minutes."

Missions meant getting out of this place for a while, that was all Liv needed to know. She would deal with whatever came her way when it did, so far that philosophy had worked well for her.

She noticed Angel moving her hands and grinned. People usually reacted that way, those few who knew what she could do and it was one more reason to avoid them altogether. You could only avoid bumping into people for so long and contact meant knowing a lot about their bodily functions, she couldn't see how anyone would like that.

"Yeah, no problem. It's for my own sanity, too. Though I'm curious to see if mutants are any different from humans for me, that can wait. A long while for all I care."

"All the more reason to help you. Not everyone can learn just by reading a book."

As soon as Angel realized what she was doing, she instantly felt bad and brought her hands back to the front. She was the last person to intentionally make someone feel bad about their ability. "You've never touched a mutant before?"

"Life would be so much easier if we could just copy and paste stuff and save it in our heads."

"Nope, I haven't even met any mutants until now. Not knowingly at least. It's not like there are secret underground clubs for us-if there are nobody has let me in on that secret which would be a damn shame."

She hadn't even paid much attention to anything regarding mutants, she wasn't one of those that stood out and therefore didn't care what was going on.

She giggled. "Like the Matrix without that ugly plug thing."

Angel just made a face. "Actually... there are secret clubs. Secret schools too where kids can go to train and get a handle on their abilities. Once you're in, it's actually a pretty tight knit community."
