As soon as the paperwork was finished, Sgt. Barq was put on a helicopter and flown to Washington. She didn’t as questions about why they were rushing her to Fort Wenachee. If they wanted her there as soon as possible, she would be there. No one could miss her arrival. The helicopter circled the camp first while the pilot waited for permission to ( Read more... )

Martini had been staring up at the sky for some time now. When one of the more curious grunts had asked him what he was doing, he had received only a half mumbled answer, something along the lines of "There's a dragon falling out of the sky."

The soldier had wandered off, not disguising his disgust as he muttered, "Freak." Martini could have cared less. He saw a stream of jumbled images in his head. Someone was coming, a woman he was fairly certain, but not on the ground. She would come from the air. But how? And in what? And why He was determined to figure the puzzle with an uncharacteristic sense of patience.

He was finally rewarded when a helicopter touched down and Jennifer stepped out. Martini ambled over to the helipad. "A woman would come from the sky. Now she has. I knew it!"

Jen didn't quite know what to do about the man who had approached her. He was probably one of the special troops here, but that didn't quite explain why he was out waiting for her.

"I'm looking for Captain Sykes," she said, going for business. "Can you tell me where he is?"

If Jennifer wanted a good introduction to the more extreme personalities of some of the inhabitants of the camp, she was certainly receiving it now. Martini nodded, attention already wandering now that he knew he had been right in the arrival of the sergeant. "Up, down, all around he is. They echo and I see 'em so clearly, like ripples in a pool."

She didn't know what to say at first. The guy sounded like some sort of nut. Or a really bad poet. She didn't have much experience with either of those. "So, you don't know?"

"He is here. Or will be. Or was." Martini shrugged. It was the best answer he could give, and really, he had put quite a lot of effort into that one to try and make himself understood. His eyes focused in on Jennifer for a moment, looking her over, but always avoiding her eyes.

That still wasn't really an answer, but at least it made some sort of sense. Or maybe it just made sense in comparison to this man's previous answer. Jen was going to have a hard time with this one.

"Can you point me towards his office?"

Martini tried to think logically. It was hard going, as Jennifer's question pinged around the inside of his mind, trying to filter past all the nonsense cluttering it up. Finally, he answered, in his own unique way, of course.

"Some go this way. Some go that way. But I prefer the shortcut." Amazingly enough, he was pointing right at the building where the office was.
