The problem with being a genius was Hope got bored very quickly. The other problem was the camp was in the middle of the Russian wilderness where there were very few forms of distraction, leaving Hope with very few options on how to entertain herself. A bored genius could easily get in trouble just trying to stay entertained.
She read all her books, some of them more than twice, spent a lot of time in the lab working on genetic research and there was always the delightful distraction of Atticus but even with that she was terribly, utterly bored with the camp and life in the camp. She didn't want anything too exciting to happen, she just needed something to keep her hands and her mind busy for awhile.
That was how she ended up in the Mess Hall with a Swiss Army knife and the toaster. It was a temperamental piece of kitchenware. Sometimes it burned toast, sometimes it didn’t toast at all and sometimes it was perfect. Hope, in her fit of boredom, had decided she was going to fix it.
Now she had the toaster completely disassembled and was slowly piecing it back together, hunched over the pile of screws, wires and other odds and ends like some sort of crow. She hadn’t found the reason for its malfunctioning nature but she was confident she’d have it by the time she put it back together. The flaw would reveal itself in time and with nothing to do around here, she had plenty of that.
