"The sun is shining... but the ice is slippery!" - OTA

Heather was feeling a little down in the dumps. So far her stint in the (to her) new team of mutants had been nothing like what she'd imagined. Any training she wanted, apparently she'd have to arrange for herself. Now and then some team members went on missions, but she hadn't been picked for one yet, and honestly, she was starting to wonder more and more if her talents might not be better served elsewhere.

Yes, she'd saved Betsy from freezing to death, while both of them were other than their proper age. She'd saved another mutant, a very unusual one, who had become a tiny, blue baby (with a tail!), but she'd never seen him again once he was, presumably, re-aged to his proper self, and had no idea, really, who he had been. She'd survived being aged maybe sixty or more years by an out of control Martini. She'd met her own room mate, who seemed like a lovely lady, but tended to be scarce most of the time. Met a little boy and his dog, who were absolutely charming. And become aware of things going on in camp that were... strange, some of them weirdly violent, yet, her danger sense hadn't kicked in strongly on any occasion. It was bizarre.

The truth was, Heather was homesick. She missed the sun, missed the ocean, missed the sound of humanity, talking, laughing, enjoying themselves at the beach. Missed being useful.

Missed Davie. So much.

When the sun finally came out, pale and weak though it was, Heather couldn't waste it indoors. She wasn't well versed in winter sports, but she had gone ice skating, maybe twice, at a rink in one of the big Gold Coast shopping malls. She had a fantastic sense of balance, most surfers did, and while this was ever so much different, the water being stiff and immobile as opposed to moving up and down, it was something to do. Something active, something that did, if she let it, remind her of happier days.

She collected skates from the equipment locker and dug her shades out of her bag, along with the usual gear, and headed down to the small lake that was not that far from camp. Outdoor skating would be more of a challenge than at a rink. Maybe a challenge was what she needed.
