He moved just slightly faster than the normal speed of time to get the jump on the cat, not wanting the feline to run away. Poor Amanda was suddenly enveloped in a bone-crushing hug as Martini picked the cat up, petting it rather roughly. "Where did you come from? Better not let Razi find you, unless you like being chased around. Do you have a name?" He checked the cat, but there was no collar. "Well, no matter. He looked at the cat, a note of confusion in his voice. "Do you see Them?" Amanda just blinked her yellowy-green orbs at him. He flopped his head back on a pillow. "Of course you don't. Hey, don't cats usually purr? Where's the on switch?" He tickled her behind a ear, as though searching for the button.

He relaxed his grip a little more, now that he was confident that his kitty friend wasn't going to run away. His tone sounded a little sad and wistful as he spoke. "Y'know, I never had a pet. They weren't allowed where I was." Martini continued stroking the soft, fine fur behind the feline's ears.

She was a bit sad for him. At the circus, they'd had pets everywhere. She slunk into his lap--what, it was warm--and then she curled up there, her head on her paws.
