lazy man-child is lazy (OTA)

It was mid-afternoon and he'd missed lunch. And breakfast. That was fine. He was used to doing things himself anyway so, now, Jamie was at the stove, keeping his eyes on what he hoped would end up a grilled turkey and cheese sandwich and a pot of chicken soup. He had a bad habit of becoming mildly distracted and things burned just slightly. It was ( Read more... )

"You know that could be a very handy ability you have there. Too bad it can't cook for shit." Betsy muttered from the doorway. The smell drew her to the kitchen but she stopped to watch for a few minutes before letting her presence be known.

Rather than go over to the table, she head for the kitchen and started searching the refrigerator.

"It was useful back in Kansas," Jamie replied, taking a bite of his sandwich before looking up at the girl. "So far, it's been pretty useless here."

This didn't sit well with Jamie, as was apparent by the faint frown on his face. "The turkey in there is from yesterday. The roast beef is from..a couple days before? And I think there's leftover spaghetti in there, too."

"I don't eat leftovers if I can help it. Food never tastes as good reheated." Of course, that left her options limited since most things were bought in bulk specifically to feed an army, not just one person. So she took the eggs, a loaf of bread, butter, and a frying pan and moved over to the stove.

"I would think you would be well suited for reconnaissance." She offered as she set to work buttering the pan as it heated up. "You're not actually going to eat that, are you?"

"i'm good for whatever," Jamie said, sounding just a little smug. It wasn't an entirely honest statement but Jamie was a fast learner. He looked at his sandwich for a moment, large brown eyes returning to the woman as one eyebrow raised slightly.

"Yeah, actually." A pause. "Maybe. Why?"

"Would you like something edible?" She asked over the sound of sizzling. The smell of fried eggs and toast lofted around her. Just a little salt and pepper, maybe some cheese and it would be perfect.

"This is edible," Jamie said with a faint pout. It really wasn't as edible as he was letting on. The cheese was just odd, the bread had a strange consistency.

And those eggs smelled like how mom used to make them. Damn it.

"Okay, yeah. Edible sounds good." He pushed his plate away. The soup was still good, though. That was something.

Betsy smirked, made him a plate and sauntered over to the table. "It's called an egg in a basket" She informed him setting the plate in front of him. "I'm Betsy. I accept gratitude in the forms of cash, favors, and illegal contraband. Enjoy."

Jamie looked at the food, finally smiling just slightly. "I don't have cash, sorry to say. What I do have is a bottle of vodka stored in my room. If you want it, it's yours."

"Depends on the brand." She said with a smile over her shoulder as she mad her way back to the stove to finish making her own lunch. "There's nothing worse than bad vodka especially in Russia. Actually, I think here that's a punishable offense. They could take your hand."

"I don't recall. I'll check and get back to you," Jamie stated, taking a bit of his food. It was only then, of course, that it dawned on him. He didn't tell the woman his name yet. It took a minute to swallow the bite he had in his mouth and he grinned apologetically.

"I'm Jamie. It's nice to meet you."

"Jamie Madrox. I'm aware." Betsy replied as she shut off the stove. She made herself a glass of juice then took the plate and cup over to the table and sat down.

"You know what would make this really good? Bacon. I didn't see any in there."

"That's because the bacon is buried under the frozen peas." Jamie stood, heading to the freezer and searching through it til he found the bacon, holding the package up for her to see.

"Um...Molly puts it there. I dunno if you met her, yet."

"Hmm, don't believe that I have." She said then took another bite. "What does she look like? Maybe I've seen her."

"Red hair, slight Australian accent. She's one of the people that keeps track of what is and isn't in the kitchen," Jamie said as he ran the details over in his mind. He held the bacon up again. "Now, this I know how not to burn. Want me to make it?"

She stopped to think about it. "Not ringing any bells. Oh well, I'm sure to meet her eventually." A battle between her selfish want for bacon and her nice streak took place but considering she'd already done a good deed for the day who cared if his food got cold? "Sure, why not?"
