It had only been a hunt... Logan couldn't believe the shit Stryker was giving him for something so minor. Sure, everyone was supposed to stay in camp, but when had that ever stopped anyone? The lagoon had become a logical extension of the camp, no one thinking twice before going there - and what if Logan had taken it just a little bit further? It had been Nicky's birthday, and Logan had wanted to humor the kid. Hell, he'd enjoyed himself too - far more than he'd allowed himself to think he would. He hadn't expected to get in trouble - he hadn't even expected Stryker to notice he was gone.
And that was the thing. The main reason Logan was so angry was that he knew perfectly well he was in the wrong. You didn't just walk away from camp, not even when you intended to return in a few hours. He had underestimated Stryker, given him a way to get to him. Worse, he had risked bringing trouble to his family, and all he could hope now was that Stryker wouldn't go after Nicky as well. Logan had tried to cover Nicky as much as possible, saying the whole thing had been his own idea, and he'd figured the kid could use some training - Stryker wanted him to know how to kill, didn't he? All right, he might have pushed it a bit with that last comment... but what the hell was he supposed to do? Stryker owned everyone Logan cared for - including a few he couldn't even let Stryker know he cared for - and there wasn't a damn thing he could do about it.
The whole reason for this solo mission was to remind him of Stryker's position, and Logan knew it. He'd known it the moment Stryker had brought the mission up after telling him off - so typical, pointing out just how much shit he was in, and then offering a way out. It was how the man did his business, and Logan couldn't respect him any less. Logan had no choice, though; he knew that much. He couldn't say no, unless he wanted to get both himself and Victor in shit so deep, they'd be breathing through straws. Logan accepted this. Fine, Stryker had won this round. Logan would do what Stryker wanted done, and then they'd be even. Right?
But of course it wasn't as simple as that. When Stryker told him what his mission would be, Logan gave him a hard look. Elimination. That was to be expected. What he hadn't expected, though, was that one of the targets was a woman - and at that point, he knew just how much he had really underestimated Stryker. That the major went out of his way to reassure him she was just as dangerous as her male collaborators only pointed out that he knew Logan would oppose to killing a woman, and had chosen the target in spite of that - or, rather, because of it. Logan clenched his jaw, remained silent. If Stryker was hoping for objections, so he could point out just what the consequences would be if Logan didn't obey orders, he wasn't going to get them. Of course, that pleased the major all the same. Still stubbornly silent, Logan stared at that goddamn smile, and hoped that one day he'd be able to see if Stryker'd still look that way with six claws stuck in his trunk.
In his tent, Logan collected some things he might need, giving the weapon's tent a miss, because if he had to do this, he'd do it up close and personal, without excuses. He would just have time to tell Victor he was leaving, and that it might be a good idea to keep an eye on Nicky, before heading to the plane. Of course it would be a plane... Favoring paranoia over logic with people he hated this much, Logan wouldn't have been at all surprised if Stryker had chosen a plane as his mode of transportation just for a final kick in the pants. Growling softly, he picked up his bag and left.
