Well folks, I have just been promoted from unemployed to underemployed!
I just got hired as a part-time office grunt intern for a state government agency. $14 dollars an hour, but I can't work more than 20 hours per week, and I don't get any benefits like health insurance, so I better never get sick, and I'll still have to rely on my boyfriend to make ends meet, but at least it's better than nothing.
There's also the possibility of being hired on full time some day. Except most state government agencies are under hiring freezes right now (Texas is one of the states that's into the idea of helping the economy by cutting taxes by cutting state workers), so they'll only have an opening if someone else quits and they really need someone in that position. But if that happens I'll be one of the first people they'll look at.
I guess I should count myself lucky to have gotten anything at all. My boyfriend works for the government as a utility plant operator, and he's been going through applications for an assistant UPO. Even though the position only requires a high school diploma, he's been getting applicants who have Masters degrees and even one PhD!
That's how bad things are out there. My bf only has a Bachelor's degree, and he's about to turn down several people who have advanced degrees in chemistry and engineering and stuff like that to be his assistant!
Don't know if that makes anyone feel better or not. Just don't be too hard on yourself, since you can be awesome and still not get the job just because there's so much competition right now.
