I don't see any stipulations in the rules about age, but forgive me if this an inappropriate entry to post to your community!
Hi, I'm
jigglypuff / Misaki / Alice / Kylie (I get called a lot of things). I'm a fifteen-year-old Australian girl, and I turn sixteen in November. I have a very flexible schedule. I am no longer in high school and am a distance education university student. Study is not very taxing, and I usually find myself lying around absolutely bored. Even before this shitty economic recession, my family is somewhat poor. To be blunt, we live on pensions and disability / carer allowances. I'd like to get a part-time job that allows me to take care of my own expenses further. :) However, there are a lot of limitations that make this situation somewhat complicated, and I was hoping you guys could give me some advice!
If I was an employer? I probably wouldn't hire myself unless I knew me. I am a hard-working person and I'm fairly mature for my age. I am at a disadvantage compared to a lot of other people looking for a job too, though, because of the following:
- I am extremely socially anxious and the idea of me getting a job would also to be help me develop life skills; throwing me into a situation where I deal constantly with customers would just make me have a breakdown by the end of the first day.
- My vision is poor (almost nothing left in my left eye) and I have very bad balance and motor coordination. I also suffer from constant fatigue issues.
- I have no practical work experience. I have done something in a professional capacity before, but the only skills I really gleaned from it other than 'how to charm adults with your ten-year-old whimsy' were related to dealing with the publishing industry and media. The main things I could put on a résumé are purely academic. I have a few contests where I can demonstrate my ability to work in a team, and I used to play Saturday morning sports. That's about it.
- I'm shy about getting references because my mother is currently embarking on a lawsuit vs. my previous high school, which is the only one where I attended long enough for teachers to know me. I don't want to bother the editor at the publishing company I dealt with for references as to my professional behaviour, either.
- I can't work late. I'm not sure how late is too late, because I'd have to talk to my parents about it, and it would depend on the actual nature of the job.
However, I have some points that can be emphasised:
- I am very responsible and treat everyone else politely. I can follow instructions and, thanks to a decade of bullying, I can ignore minor taunts.
- I do not drink, I do not smoke, the only drugs I take are prescribed to me, I do not party, and I do not flake. I am pretty much the epitome of 'responsible student'. There is no way in hell I would be turning up for work hungover or calling off sick because I was out late partying, or taking cigarette breaks or anything. (I'm asthmatic.) I don't mean this offensively to people who do drink, smoke, take drugs, or party though! I'm very sorry if this is perceived as tactless.
- I can't drive, but my parents would be very willing to transport me to and fro, so transport is a non-issue.
- I'm a very driven person and I have initiative in the sense that if I see a chair lying around or an uncleaned dish, I'll take care of it myself instead of leaving it for someone else.
- I am a very strictly hygienic person. I used to carry around hand sanitiser and spray doorknobs before I touched them when I was suffering from OCD pretty terribly, but that's over now and I've been left with a great respect for cleanliness.
My main skills are the following:
- I type with great speed (over 160 wpm) and accuracy.
- I am a good proofreader. (Sorry if this post has any mistakes, by the way; I'm utterly exhausted.)
- I am pretty good with computers. I don't think this is really relevant directly to anything I'd be doing, but I've been self-teaching myself several programming languages since I was twelve. However, my main interest lies in software and not hardware, and I would feel uncomfortable working in an advisory capacity. D:
There is a job I would like, actually; hear me out here, because I know I'm going to sound mad. I really love washing dishes. I'm not going to rant about why, but I would love to wash dishes for some kind of restaurant or café. I find it very enjoyable, get enthusiastic about it (to the point I'm a freak with dishwashing fetishes :P) However, is this actually relevant anymore? Do most cafés have dishwashing machines? How hard is it to get employment as a dishwasher with no previous experience? I understand that I'd essentially be a serf, which is no more than what I'm expecting, and I'd honestly be happy enough to be employed. Do you guys have any advice?
Thank you for hearing me out!
