Job interview tomorrow...I need advice on some things

Aug 03, 2009 23:51

I've been watching this community for a couple of weeks. I thought I would finally make a post.
I've been getting really downhearted with trying to find a job. I'm so frustrated with it. I'd love to just take a break from looking for a while
and rethink everything that's been happening, but we (my husband and I) really don't have the money for me to take time off from looking.
I've applied for around 40 jobs (maybe more) in the last 4-5 months and I'm still coming up with nothing. I've only had a small handful of interviews. No one is interested in me because I don't hold a college degree. I've never even applied for a job where college degree was a must. Every one always said they would rather give the job to someone with a college degree though. A few months ago I even started sending resumes to random retail stores (mall stores, family owned stores, etc), and no one wants to hire me there because I don't have retail experience. This is something I just can't seem to understand. I had a friend a few years back who held 5 different mall jobs at once. She said none of the cash registers were the same and no store policies were the same and etc. so she had to be trained on all of them even though she had years of retail experience. Why then is it, that no one wants to hire me because I'm inexperienced with retail?
So many times I've heard, "Well we're really looking for someone who's worked in retail before." I don't really know where to go from here.
I've applied for everything available in my area and all the surrounding (affordable to drive to) areas.

I have a rabbit who is in need of medical attention (he has to see a vet once a month) but I can't afford to take him right now. I also have a cat needing to be seen by a vet (I think he has ear mites) but can't afford that. My cars shocks and tire rod (I think it was the tire rod too) are completely bad and are causing diagonal stripping on my tires...I had to shell out $200 last month for new back tires because of it. But if I don't get the rod and shocks fixed it will start diagonally stripping my brand new tires again but I can't afford the shocks and etc. We almost missed our house payment for this month because his pay check wasn't as much as it usually was because of some issues that happened that could not be helped. We're literally so strapped for cash we may be eating bread and mayo for a while until something turns around. It's all very scary and very frustrating.

Anyway that was a bit of just  getting out my emotions on the topic and such...I just felt like I needed to write about it a bit, I don't really know why,

I have a job interview tomorrow as a receptionist for a salon. It's not much but it's a job and it's money.
But in the last few days, I've started getting worried. I realized I will be answering phones and such.
I have a bit of an accent and I'm afraid I won't get the job because of this. Can anyone offer me any advice?
I have a small southern accent (it's hard to explain the sound of it). I live in the same state I was born in
but last year I moved 4 hours into the Northern area of the state and since then I've had a large problem with my accent.
Every where I go people always ask me where I'm from and they talk to me like I'm stupid because of my southern accent.
It's caused huge problems (especially with making new friends and etc) because I'm always afraid to open my mouth and
talk around new people. Even doctors that I've went to have said things rudely to me while questioning about my accent.
I know I shouldn't let it bother me but I can't help it. I cringe everytime someone says "Where on earth are you from!?"
or "I know you aren't from around here, you have a weird accent."

Most people in the area I moved to are very judgemental about accents from the southern part of the state. Even when I try to use a "business voice" and make my voice/tone seem more proper, people can still tell that I have an accent. I'm really stressing and I'm not sure what I should do. Any help would be awesome.

Also, I've seen sites and posts about job interview questions. The problem I have is, all of the sites/postings are answers more for big jobs in large companies and such. I haven't seen any that give good examples of answers more suitable for retail job interviews or small jobs like the salon I'm trying to become a part of. Answering things with "I really want to be here as this company grows" can't really apply to those situations. So if anyone knows of a good site for good ways to answer smaller job interview questions, please let me know!

interviews, advice
