An Introduction and Cry for Help?

Also one of the people who found this place by Spotlight. Glad to meet you all, sorta. Only iffy about it because unemployment is quite the hassle. (And yeah, seeing what others have to go through I realize I don't even begin to comprehend how bad it can get.)

My situation is a little special since a lot of it is my fault. ( Read more... )

Buck up, you at least aren't blaming others! That's an honorable trait.

Check online for writing positions for blogs. Some of them pay per post, but be sure you know what you are getting into. Also, as I've offered other writers before. Sign up for Amazzon's ebook seller position and write a few well thought out and interesting articles, short ebooks, how-to's (or in your case how not to's) and such. Not joke, how-not-to books and articles are just as popular to read as how to's.

This way you are then, in fact, PUBLISHED!

Are you on oDesk.com? If not, you should be.
I'm going to school for journalism, and use this for tons of freelance work. The pay is usually next to nothing, but it's a good way to build a portfolio. They've got jobs in just about every writing field [plus more, like virtual assistants, and technical stuff], including creative writing. It's free to join.

If I were you, I would go to www.volunteermatch.org and find a place to volunteer at doing office work. If there's nothing there, check in with your animal shelter, library, etc.

The job market is so bad right now -- companies don't need or want to take a risk on someone who doesn't have experience. It sucks, trying to break into a field and make a living at the same time.

Best of luck!

I think you should call all the non-profit organizations in your area that do anything you are even remotely interested in. Non-profits have no money and I think many would love a talented intern with a bachelor's degree. Especially if you have writing skills, many non-profits need help writing grants (a VERY good job that is often in demand), etc. Try it.

Thanks to everyone who answered. I figured I could get a lot out of this place and now I have a better understanding of what options are available to me ( ... )
