Night jobs?

Sep 14, 2013 22:23

A friend suggested I apply for overnight shifts, with the idea being that fewer people would be clamoring for them.

1. Is there any truth to that?
2. What sort of overnight jobs could someone with only a BA in English be qualified for?

1. I don't know; I've only applied for overnight jobs a few times, only got an interview for one, and didn't get that one.
2. Call center work, restocking shelves at groceries and other retail stores, hotel clerks, hospital reception, gas station attendant, possibly some security gigs.

I work nights for a press release distribution service (there are a few of us, and all of the big ones have editors working 24/7). Half of my job is proofreading releases and making sure they meet the company's guidelines, and the other half is taking calls.

You could always just try searching a site like Indeed for phrases like "overnight" and see what sort of jobs pop up.

There aren't too many of those out there; but, truth, working nights is something that most people don't want to do, so the competition will be a bit less than positions that work evenings, let alone 'bankers hours'. On the down-side, while working nights has it's benefits (less supervision/more independence than days, no managers/supes looking over your shoulder & checking up on you), there'll be times you'll have to make decisions where you won't be able to win for losing b/c the boss will still second-guess you in the morning. You *might* make a little more than a day shifter, but the price you pay is the toll working nights takes on your body. You're awake when nature meant for you to be asleep, and you don't want to fall asleep on the job. You've got to sleep when it's light out, and you still have to arrange personal business around BOTH your work & sleep schedule, which isn't as easy as it sounds. (The rest of the world takes night crews for granted, like we still have all day to do what we need to do, AND sleep at night. ( ... )
