THIS. Everyone's expected, by those from the President on down, to suck it up & start over, wherever you can. "Go back to school & learn a new career." "Even minimum wage is better than nothing."
BULL$H!T. The general attitudes towards that are, if you haven't been working for $minimu all your life & are used to living accordingly (illegal$$ working their butts off & living in hovels while supporting their families back home, or high school & college kids earning extra $), that you won't stay with them a minute longer than necessary. (As we'll all admit, very true.) So, they don't bother with anyone else, and we don't bother with them; unless somebody manages to break the mold & become one of those increasing few who went from some low-mid level white collar job to the service sector 'Ding! Fries are done!' jobs that seem to be the only thing open. And as to changing mid-career? Somebody in their late 30's, early 40's, or older, forgetting about supporting themselves and their family, going back to school, completing studies in an entirely different field, and competing with the young(er) turks out there? Who's more likely going to get hired out of two people applying for the same job? The younger person, more likely, especially if they've got any more experience than the older person; but as likely if the experience between the two was the same. After a certain point in one's life, it's too late to go back and start from square one again. You have to seek out what you can do, and what you're most likely to get hired for, for the minimum you can function with. And for most Americans, that ain't minimum wage, so if that's all there is, you gotta pull more shifts or get a second job to go with the first, then you gotta make the two schedules work together, ay yi yi...
