Hey T_U, I'm wondering about the demographics here. Would you mind filling out the survey and posting in the comments? Anon commenting is on for this entry, so feel free to do this under the cover of darkness.
2. How long have you had the status above? Two years, unemployed for four months after graduating college in 2008, gave up the search in my field and went into retail.
3. What is your educational level? If you have degree/s, what are they in? I have a BA in English, and a minor in Classical Civilizations. ha, that was a joke.
4. If actively seeking work, how many job applications/resumes do you send out per week, on average?
I used to send out a LOT. Looking for a job is a full time job. I ended up focusing with staffing companies, and they got me the interviews.
5. If actively seeking work, how many interviews have you had since seeking work?
I had dozens, but the staffing companies would send me on interviews for jobs that I knew I didn't want and would therefore not get. A job was a job to me at that point, but interviewers can see right through you.
6. If actively seeking work, where do you look for your jobs? (i.e. online, in person, networking, etc.)
I used monster.com (how they found me for this job), and LOTS of staffing companies. They were the ones calling from the internet mostly anyway. I had a few personal connections but those weren't very helpful.
7. Any favorite job-seeking tips to share with the class?
Don't be afraid to shift your focus away from your field to something you might not have expected to be doing. I needed to get off the couch, so I went to the mall in 2008 and was hired as a sales associate at a Forever 21. A year later I'm managing a shoe store. Not what I went to school for, but it pays the bills and I actually have career growth here, so this is where I'm staying until more opportunities appear. Also, don't be afraid to sling burgers or wait tables! You learn a lot more than you think.
Employed. Somewhat happily, by accident.
