Hello all!
I joined this community because I was unemployed and before I could post to introduce myself, I had a job interview and actually GOT a job. I'm posting, however, because I do still have a problem.
My boyfriend currently lives with me at my parents' house. He graduated last year with two degrees: Bachelor of Science in Communication and Bachelor of Science in Visual Communication.
He studied graphic design and has done nothing for the past year but search for jobs and get few interviews here and there. He moved from Minnesota to Illinois to be with me and continue his job hunt and still has little luck -- even living in the big city of Chicago.
I'm hoping that through this community, I can help him get his career going with tips from you guys. I've tried giving him tips of my own, but I'm not sure he's still listening to me or just wishing I'd stop.
So far I've come up with the following:
* Make phone calls. Email is nice and convenient, but not nearly as aggressive since it's so easy to delete an e-mail without any response whatsoever. Phone calls get you answers.
* Find something in the meantime. While part-time jobs aren't nearly as much fun, it's an income. Even if it's full-time but still something you don't want to do, it's still money and work experience.
* Don't spend all of your time job hunting. Set a goal for a certain amount of jobs a day. When you apply to those jobs, stop. Go out and enjoy living life and forget about jobs for the rest of the day. The best things happen when you least expect them.
* Make a list. If you apply to jobs, make a list of the company name, address, phone number, website, e-mail, and date you applied. If you don't hear back within a week or two, give them a call and get some answers and record what happens on your list!
* Meet people and get connections. Find some sort of group of people who can help you get jobs. Get to know people who can get you into the business.
* Don't give up. Remember that this economy is in a slump and you not finding a job is NOT your fault. Keep your chin up and you'll get something.
I really hope that he will find something and I'm hoping that this community can help me help him -- and help me if this job falls through.
And I hope that maybe my tips may help some of you.
Thank you :)
