Hi guys, I graduated college in 2007 during the horrible start of the market downturn. I finished school with a solid GPA but with a "worthless" degree. I graduated with an average GPA and a BS in Materials Science and Engineering. (thats hoity toity speak for I study synthetics) I have an eleven year career behind me and I had a murderous time finding work after my project was canceled 2 years ago. I signed up with a temp agency and worked through them for a while.
I have learned that most companies dont interview as tough for temps because, well to be blunt, you're only there for a few months and thats it, not as much risk for the company. So it is easier to get a temp position. Temp positions do count for resume building, like internships but they tend to carry more responcibility than an internship, (because you have earned the degree and you are no longer 'just' a student worker, you are a temporary *Employee*) so they could carry more weight when someone looks at your resume. And I have also discovered that there are some companies that will only ever hire people who have temped for them. (I refer to that as the rent to own program) It may be different for your field but in science and chemistry it is surprisingly common.
And I have been offered a new position just in the last week specifically because of my experience working as a temp doing the very work this new company needs.
this got longer than I thought it would.
Anyhow, I hope things get better soon.
