hee! You're so funny! I love *THAT* ! ;-)

I often start off with that...

And sometimes I actually DO have "band camp" stories.

Do you?

I actually do. I went to a music camp from 2nd grade til summer before sophmore year, with only a few missed inbtween.
The last two times I went, I was with a bunch of friends who were kinda...unusual...but they were the people I fit in. Last time, they thought we were drunk....:)

Wow, that's a lot of Summers! I thought you had stories, being musical and all. Thought we talked about our musical backgrounds at some point! It figures, that just cause they were different, ppl thought they were drunk! UGH!!! sigh ( ... )

They thought we were drunk because it was late at night and we had been out in the field spinning around in circles while staring at the stars. And my friend had a hip that would pop out of the socket at bad times, and it did while we were talking, and we were already kinda loopy.
I was technically in orchestra, and all hell was raised if our black shoes weren't polished, if our skirts were too short, if we wore jewlery, or if our sleves weren't the right lenghth.
I ended up with 4 black skirts and 5 white blouses, one of each year and group. *sigh*

Oh gods the hip thing makes me feel like "nails on a chalkboard"... although, I have hips that pop, too! They do it at certain times, when I move a certain way, though they aren't always super loud. When things like that happen on me, it's not so "nails on a chalkboard", though. And I think THAT'S weird ( ... )

We couldn't have any skirts shorter than our knees, but one of my conductors insisted on floor length black skirts. Mind, we were always sitting down, violins don't exactly walk and play at the same time. :)
Girls were supposed to wear shirts, but you could pull off slacks as long as they were really nice.
The sleeve length mostly mattered during final concerts or compations when everything had to be uniform.

Ha! True! ;-)

So, is that what you played, violin?

What else did you play, overall? You were in all those Summer band camps.

I played piano since first grade. Then clarinet since third, and of course was in the marching band in highschool, but one of those years joined the percussion section and marched carrying the marimbas and and even bass drum! The percussion team even had a few competitions of their own! I played timpany in those.

And of course, since Xmas, I've been playing the guitar... I love it. :-)

I played violin for 10+ years before I had to set it aside because of the migraines. T_T. I loved it.
They were actually music camps, but there one orchestra to the 4 bands, so it was pretty much a band camp and PS strings were allowed. It was fun though.
I played in symponies from 6th-10th grade, before I had to give that up as well.

But yeah, it was a lot of fun.

Well, you certainly did play muchly for a long time. And I'm glad you had fun at those camps; that's many years of good memories, then. I am sorry you had to give it/the violin up for the danged Migraines. I know, damn things. I actually think about the violin, when I play the guitar, especially when I get really uncomfortable, because it is not a comfortable thing really for me to do. My neck and back get sore fast. I've tried ALL kinds of different which ways to try to make it better... and I've thought/wondered that the violin might be worse. Though, I'm not sure if that's why you mean you had to give it up, exactly.

I did have some trouble with my neck and back about 5th grade. I had switched to a full size violin the year before. It turns out that I have shoulders that slope more than the average person. So my teacher had me get chin rest that was about 2 inches taller than most people's. It helped a lot. Back pain also was based on how I carried both my upper body and how I positioned my legs. It wasn't always easy, and about once every 2 years, my teacher would bare down on me and make me change almost everything about my position. It was great.
I have no idea what it would be like for the guitar.
I loved the violing, and mostly had to give it up because I wasn't stable enough to practice on a regular schedual, and so I would lose all of what I'd just gained. That and the auditions were becoming really stressful. I went from one audition to another. As soon as one was over, before the results were in, I'd be working on the next.
I still play for fun though.

Interesting about your shoulders, but really cool about the extra tall chin rest!!! That's neat!

Yes, I am relating to what you mean about carrying the upper body and leg positioning, regarding the guitar. I am always looking over to the left, because you are allowed (and need) to look left for the finger positions.

I'm sorry you had to give it up. One thing about doing the guitar the way I am, later in life, (though yes, I am doing a Monday night college class), is that basically I can go at my own pace. This is good, considering my already really busy schedule. But I DO have to practice, and I do, in order to progress at all! Right? ;-)

hugz!
