don't trust a man who makes toys in a land where children are forbidden
I still find this terrifying:
So evil. This and the apple scene in Snow White used to give me nightmares.
There’s this scene in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang when the family goes to the fairy-tale land where there are no children anywhere, because the evil queen is afraid of them and has outlawed them. After the Child Catcher has lured his own children away, Dick Van Dyke’s character goes down into the caves underneath the town and sees all the children living there in a giant cavern. They take care of each other and raid the castle for food and eventually end up helping bring down the evil regime through their crazy hijinks.
When I was seven and I first watched the movie, that became my favorite imagination. I made my little sisters play cave orphans with me for years. I still sometimes want to run away and live in a cave.
Also, I want every rendition of “abandoned children living underground” to exist in story form. I think it should be a fandom staple as much as the coffee shop AU or the bodyswap fic or the Canadian shack challenge. Every fandom should have an obligatory underground orphans AU. I firmly believe it.
