spencer reid is kind of awesome but the show is kind of frightening

I am currently watching Criminal Minds for the first time, and it is hitting my Fear Threshold. I haven't stopped watching yet, because I love awesome characters and teamstories, but. I have a relatively high tolerance for blood and gore and stuff, but this show seems to be targeting my nightmare scenarios: people hiding in the closet, rolling over and finding a stranger in bed with you, the graphic depictions of women who are utterly terrified. Tt's that fear that gets me, more than anything in particular that is done to them, the way that the shots linger on the moments in which they so powerless and afraid. I'm a few episodes in, and on the one hand there's Reid and Gideon and Hotch and Morgan and Garcia (<3), but on the other, I work hard enough already to keep images of terror like that out of my head. It's one of the reasons I stopped watching Supernatural, and the primary reason I don't usually watch casefile-type shows, but you all have harnessed me in with your talk of the awesome Criminal Minds characters, and now I'm hooked.

IDK. This is the kind of show that I think I might be able to deal with given a strong female character to empathize with, but while all of the male characters have pinged for me, I haven't really found anything to hold onto in either JJ (who hasn't gotten to do anything yet) or Elle (who has gotten very little character development). Garcia, of course, is AWESOME, but she has had (so far?) too minor a role to really count for this. Women are the primary targets of the show's violence, so far, so I need to see a woman front and center in dealing with that in order to enjoy the rest of the show.

So. Criminal Minds fans, I would appreciate your help. Is there some of that coming, if I keep watching? (Also, if you remember any episodes with particularly graphic representations of female helplessness/pain/fear, I'm going to do my best to avoid those.)
