Something Borrowed

“This is bad,” the Doctor says, tugging at the band around his finger. “This is very, very bad.”

“Oh, don’t be such a child,” Jackie says, waving about the hand with the matching band on it. “Honestly. We can try some soap.”

“Oh, Jackie,” the Doctor says, “it’s really not that simple.”

“Mum, give me your hand,” Rose says, grabbing her mother’s wrist. “Maybe I can... maybe it’s just stuck...”

“Well I don’t understand, it slipped right on a minute ago. Ow.” Jackie pulls her hand out of her daughter's grasp. “Careful, would you? That’s attached.”

The Doctor shoves a hand in his coat pocket, fishing for the sonic screwdriver. “You had to let her try it on?”

Rose looks at him helplessly. “You know what my mother’s like. And this is entirely your fault.”

“How on Earth is this my fault? You put it on, you don’t take it off. Simple, nice, doesn’t need instructions.”

She pokes his chest. “You said twenty-five hours! They wouldn’t activate for twenty-five hours.”

“Lorathian hours!” He turns his attention towards his screwdriver, hunting for an appropriate setting. “Twenty-five Lorathian hours. Aha!”

“Oh.” Rose’s shoulders fall. “How long is that?”

“Activated? What?” Jackie’s face reddens as she’s torn between glaring at him and the gold band on her finger. “What does she mean ‘activated’? What kind of a ring have you given my daughter? Bloody alien git.”

He ignores her, too busy frowning at the results of his scan. If everything fails, he’s going to need the practice.

“They’re Bonding Rings,” Rose says, voice very, very calm. “Lorathian Bonding rings.”

“Like wedding rings,” he adds, “only literally.”

Jackie flops down on to the couch. “Get them off,” she says. “Right now.”

“Working on it.” He flicks to another setting. Can he resonate gold?

He looks up as a hand touches his shoulder.

Rose’s lips twitch. “Should I call you ‘dad’ now?”

“That’s not funny,” he says, but his lips quirk despite himself.

“Can you get them off?”

He shakes his head and sighs. “Doesn’t look like it.”

She frowns and leans in close. When she speaks it's in a whisper, like she’s imparting a secret. “We’re supposed to be married, you and me.”

“We are, Rose.”

“I wore a dress.”

“It was a very nice dress.”

“You wore a suit.”

“I always wear a suit.”

“Doctor-”

“I know.” He catches her hand and links their fingers. “We’ll figure something out.”

She squeezes his hand. “Promise?”

“I’m not staying married to your mother.”

“Got that right,” Jackie says, snapping out of her daze on the couch.

She stands up and is across the room before either of them has a chance to react. “Jacket weather? Do I need to change?”

“What? Why, where are you going?” the Doctor asks, blinking in confusion.

She raises an eyebrow, one hand on her hip. “Alien marriage, alien divorce. Come on, let’s go.”

“They don-”

“They bloody well will,” she interrupts. “Now come on, into that box of yours.”

He shoots Rose a look. “Well, I suppose we could tr-”

“Good.” Satisfied, Jackie walks out the front door. “And you should consider yourself lucky I haven’t smacked you silly for fooling me in to marrying you.”

The possibilities flash through his mind - if they refuse, if he can’t get them off - and Jackie? She’s got a good forty years left in her at the very least...

“If this doesn’t work,” he says, grabbing Rose’s arm as she starts to follow her mother. “Promise you’ll regenerate me?”

“If this doesn’t work,” Rose assures him, “I won't have to. Mum'll do it for me.”
