Quite Often, I Dream

--

The flashing blue light reflects off the towers of glass and concrete surrounding him and John knows he must be dreaming again.

I dream I'm this... Adventurer. This... daredevil, a madman. 'The Doctor', I'm called.

The traveller’s world, he thinks, looking at the street around him.

His hand moves to his neck of its own accord and finds his pulse. He's surprised to find just the one steady beat, but then he doesn’t often know when he’s dreaming.

There's a crowd of oddly-dressed people milling about on the other side of a metal barrier, staring at something past him, but when he turns to look he sees nothing fantastic - nothing more fantastic, that is, than what's all around him.

There's a white metal machine with 'AMBULANCE' festooned on the side and more lights, flashing red, and it's giving him a headache, all these lights, all this noise.

“Excuse me,” he calls, trying to grab the attention of one of the men on the other side. “Can you tell me what's going on?”

The man ignores him - looks right past him as if he can't see him, and he probably can't, John realises, peculiar dreams that he has.

Nothing for it, he thinks, and decides to simply ride this one out.

He's pacing the length of the metal fence when he sees her and he stops wondering what's happening, why his mind takes him on such fantastical adventures, because, for once, he thinks he might know the answer.

He moves until she's right in front of him, separated only by the metal barrier.

He's certain he knows-

Rose, he thinks, with the sudden clarity only his dreams possess.

His Rose.

She's just an invention. This character. Rose, I call her.

He calls out to her and starts to reach for her but realises, hand hovering in the air between them, she can neither hear nor see him.

She looks right past him, her eyes dancing with the flash of the lights and, with more of that strange clarity, it occurs to him that she doesn't even know he exists.

Seems to disappear later on.

When she turns and walks away his one human heart breaks.
