It doesn’t hurt him, the loss of her from his life. There’s no hole she should have filled, no heart-twisting ache and his words don’t echo in empty space, even when he thinks they probably should.
He wanted to miss her, he'd tried hard to miss her. He thought about her laugh and her smile and he remembers her hand, the warmth of it, clasped tightly against his, her life and death, wound loosely around his fingers, and it doesn’t hurt, her loss, it doesn’t faze him at all.
It can’t - oh, Rose - she’s just another shadow in the dark.
