So I sort of had two shared dates to the Mill's high school prom my senior year. (I didn't go there.) My friend Andy Katz who I knew through a youth mock government club and a Jewish youth group (yeah I was that cool) was my official date to get me in. I forget if I went with him because his girlfriend was away at a debate convention or if that was another dance. Incidentally Andy Katz has a master's in urban planning, still hangs out with his undergrad fraternity, has run but lost a successful campaign for city council, and is in law school. The girlfriend graduated law school last year, interned in DC, and is probably losing her soul to an impressive firm or judge.
Anyway, unofficially Rachel went with Andy because of some tradition. Rachel, Andy and Co. were full of traditions like watching South Park at Andy's Wednesday nights, using saran wrap to TP cars, milkshakes at Lyons, testing modesty, and physical fights. Rachel's boyfriend is her old best friend Rachel we now call Caeden. Tommy, an underclassman got into prom with Rachel, but was my date. He married an older man in Canada over new years and is no longer friends with his ex-wife. And then there is me: An observant Jew, married to a Minnesota boy, living in New York, and thrilled to be a knocked up housewife.
I write about where we are now to remember that some people become exactly what everyone voted them most likely to do in high school. Some people become themselves in the most unexpected of ways.
Tommy commented on my MySpace today. That's what made me remember.
I just had the greatest memory of riding in your yellow car in a tux, and you in a wedding dress. And it was 100 degrees outside and the sun was so bright I couldn't see out the windows. And we stopped at a 7-11 in downtown San Francisco and got Slurpies - because we were just that cool. And the homeless men sitting on the sidewalk outside congratulated us on our nuptials and told us we were a very handsome couple. Miss you LM.
So I replied.
i so wish i knew how to find pictures of that night. [Hint, hint
noonle or
heartrightout.] i almost didn't have the guts to wear that dress but i'm so glad i did. you know what? i waxed my upper lip that day at a crappy salon and it burned half my skin off and i lied and told everyone i scratched it on the side of a pool. funny. i still love yellow, slurpees and weddings! you forgot that you wore black jeans with a tux shirt and coat. we're classic.
