What if the ham flavor was artificial? That would have been my first thought.

I suppose we do have kosher baco bits, but there isn't a lot of kosher, artificial ham out there. It is from Trinidad so I am wondering if it is a case of someone saying "hey if you put a little OU on the label products sell much better on the east coast". It has happened before.

I have a bag of 'chicken soup mix' powder that's totally parve... and I can buy beef flavored too...

'Flavored' to me actually implies simply 'the taste of' and not 'actual pieces' or 'actual essence' of whatever....

so ham is never kosher?
I thought something being kosher had to do with the way it's killed. At least when it comes to meat, that is.

It does have to do both with the way it is killed, but also only kosher animals are kosher. Mammals have to chew their cud and have split hooves and a pig has split hooves but doesn't chew its cud. Interestingly enough the giraffe is a kosher animal, but we don't eat it because we aren't sure exactly where in the neck to slit its throat. As for birds it is mostly birds of prey that we don't eat, but I think they are all listed in the bible. Personally I eat chicken and turkey and I'd eat duck if it didn't make me squirm.

oh, ok. i have to say i am really glad that we are both in the December 2007 babies community because having you on my flist is pretty cool. Not only are your posts interesting and you child adorable, but i have learned so much about your religion that I would have never in a million years knew otherwise. I'm sorry if all my questions get annoying.

They aren't annoying. Thank you for the compliment. I am always amazed at how mature you are. If I had an ounce of your maturity my early 20s would have been so different.

Ha! Did you ever see McDonald's "Classic" bagel: ham & cheese? Ham and jeez! (Not like McD's ever said it was kosher, but still!)

My rabbi told a story about how she was taking a group of high schoolers to Israel for a trip, and it happened to be over passover. So they're at the hotel and there's a buffet breakfast. She sat them down ahead and said, "Listen. I want you to be comfortable observing your normal level of observance. I'm not going to be the chametz police or anything, so please don't freak out because you're on the trip with a rabbi." So this kid gets his plate all stacked up and goes by her table and says, "LOOK RABBI! NO CHAMETZ!" so she looks and his plate is a big mound of eggs, SAUSAGE, and BACON ;)

This made me think of that.

Wow I thought it was near impossible to get pig bacon in Israel. Once on Pesach a friend of mine went to Jack In the Box and eat her burger with bacon and without the bread (might have had cheese too). Then she had an Oreo shake and after she finished it she was like "oh oreos".
