Of LJ Debacles, Lurkers and Fic

Sep 10, 2010 14:43

Hi everyone! I wanted to share something with you that
bookwrm89 posted here regarding the "Share This" option on all public entries on LiveJournal.

One word: Unacceptable.

This is the feature that
rambleinblue brought to my attention earlier in the week that led to my decision to FLock my journal.

There are an abundance of issues here, but the major one for me is that between the explosion of the Share This feature (which used to be just a link to email) without warning, the Twitter/FB buttons, and the lack of an opt out for either feature, we are seeing a major change in LJ's operating philosophy - one that I am no longer comfortable with. (FYI - the opt out on Share This is for the third party client not to SHARE data - it has nothing to do with the collection of data or the sharing of information).

Unfortunately, I still have paid time on LiveJournal and it will take me time to move the stories from my fic comm, so until I do all of that I will still be crossposting fic. This will be the last non-fic related post that I will crosspost.

At some point - likely by the end of this year - I will have moved everything over here and will delete all but the "You can find me here" post at LJ. Hopefully, this will give everyone who wants to time to follow the trail.

On that note - every cloud has a silver lining. Over the past week, I've been contacted by dozens of you who are self-described lurkers. All of you have said very nice things and I appreciate them. Now, as an author to readers - say them more often. Try to comment more frequently. You really have no idea how much it means to writers - and not just me. Other writers will tell you the same thing.

I can hear some of you now - 'Great Teach. Yeah. Thanks. Where's the bloody fic, woman?'

I am coding the next part of Mourning is Not Forgetting right now. Look for it in a bit.

Happy Friday!

Teach
